Any time someone starts in on me for allowing my kids to play video games, I let them know that there is more to it than just shooters. Minecraft is a perfect example. It requires planning, forethought, resource management, problem solving, imagination, and creativity. If they are playing together, it requires communication, teamwork, and seeing things from another person's perspective. My kids have interactions in Minecraft that they would not have if they were playing Mario Party. When you spend most of your time inside due to crappy weather, books and board games will only go so far with kids. I think certain video games deserve more credit, and a place on the shelf as a useful teaching tool for kids.

It could be argued that first-person shooters require many of those same skills, and they've been proven in studies to increase hand-eye coordination along with reaction times. There's nothing wrong with any type of video game, and MOST kids can play almost any game without adverse effects.

I think Minecraft is a really good example of how games should be made. I don't see kids playing this game though.

That is strange. Almost every male kid I know plays this game. Its to the extent that sometimes I feel awkward playing on servers because I am unsure if I am playing with an adult or a group of 12 year olds. But seriously, just the other week I saw my neighbor hitting a Steve pinata.

I wouldn't necessarily say that FPS games are "better" than Minecraft. It's quite violent. Minecraft is more of a construction game that also requires teamwork, but obviously not as much violence as FPS games.

Excellent counter arguement! It's amazing that people still want to come down on video games as hard as they do sometimes. I like to think of minecraft as modern day lego blocks. Did i mention I was addicted to legos as a kid? lol. And that was back when you actually had to build things, they didnt have all these fancey playsets with specially made pieces... we had to build castles 40 miles in the snow, uphill both ways!! lol. But honestly, this day in age, with the digital/ tech revolution goin on. Im glade there is still something kids, teens, or even adults could create with and let their imaginations run wild.
