I recently joined a freebuild server and I made a mansion, and it got ranked at Level 2, which is the lowest valid rank (so it was good enough for a pass, but that was it). I've never been great at building, but I was wondering if there's anything on youtube or any other websites that could help to teach me to build better structures and buildings?

Study architecture in general not just minecraft building. See if you can find some of your favorite buildings blueprints and schematics.

You've got to look at creative ways to do things from lighting to flooring and walls. You need to really look at using lots of different textures and of course blocks creatively. I like to try things on single player creative first to see if they work how I picture them to. I still have trouble with roofing...there are some people who make INCREDIBLE roofed builds and I just can't compete!

I've got a few Minecraft idea showcases on Youtube (since you mentioned wanting youtube links), here's one on kitchens and dining areas in case you want to look:

Just try to look at pictures of actual buildings and base your building off of that.

I learn to build from architecture in general, and my own creativity. I'm sufficient enough to be able to design things, because I put some time into learning such things.

I suppose taking a look at certain architectural designs (i.e. gothic) should give you some examples. Or at famous landmarks.

Just don't make overly squared and plain buildings. Get clever with the exterior and interior alike. Don't just throw a torch on the wall or make a flat roof. Throw in some real-life elements of architecture that will impress other people.

Keep at it. Don't give up because it isn't as pretty as you were hoping it would be. Keep trying. You will eventually get the hang of it after awhile. Practice does make perfect you know.

There's a lot of videos on YouTube on how to build. I suggest taking a look on other people's builds and although you shouldn't copy them, you should take an idea of how those people built it. Also trust your imagination and try to copy what is inside your imagine into the game.

Hey the sky's the limit, quite literally, just keep going at it and get creative. Try not to create wooden boxes, but actual homes that people would want to live in. Base your structures of real life and work with different materials, elevations, sizes, shapes. Square building blocks, do not have to make square builds. Just keep working at it, and use your imagination, and you will get better at it for sure :).

Look at other peoples' builds and alter their ideas little by little! Take what you think will look good and build off of that.

I built a relatively small mansion, but I'm not sure how I'd start on being able to make something bigger :(

Looking at other minecraft videos of people doing work always helps me. It will eventually just come to you as second nature, I am good at doing Castles and such, but kind of fail when trying to make more modern things. But with practice it will come to you. I have always wanted to learn to make cartoon characters with wool.

Yeah I guess what you're saying is that I can watch tutorials on youtube and eventually I'll learn what looks best on my own?

That's a good tip, thanks I'll try this out too since I'm not very good at building at all.

I'm in the same position man. I'm not very good at building either but I would love to get better. I wish to do an epic project. Most likely a giant yacht.

Yeah, there are some builds in the creative world of my server that I really like, but I don't really have a huge number of examples, because I don't know what style I'm looking for yet
