I wanted to try this game but I've read countless times that the community is really harsh towards noobs. Is that true? How long does it realistically take to at least learn the basics and be decent at it?

Riot has implemented a lot of ways for new players to by-pass the rage and hate from "seasoned" (and I use that term very lightly) players. There are tutorials that will teach you how to use the in game features, as well as after the basic tutorial, teaching you basic combat and how the game works in each and every aspect. After such, you can then move to fighting bots, which are CPU difficulties that Riot has created for players to practice on. At first this setting was sort of a joke, with the bots being so easy and so few of bots able to be played against, that it didn't help much. But with the addition of "intermediate" level of difficulty, sure the bots are not professional players, but they do at least teach a new player how to mind himself in the game, and how and when to over extend or to play it safe and retreat, etc.

But practice on bots still won't make you a great player. The best thing to do is once you feel familiarized with the items and champions you like, and have gotten some rune pages made (runes augment and add extra stats to the play style you are wanting to play) watch some videos on YouTube along the lines of "Diamond" or "Challenger" then said position and champion you would like to play and watch and learn. Then take the tips and tricks that are talked about in the videos and implement them yourself. You will get the hang of it ;). Players are always going to be negative, the LoL community is kind of a sludge pit of the trolliest people you will ever meet or have the pleasure of playing with, but don't let it discourage you. Have fun =D. It really is a fun and great game.

It honestly depends on whom you come across in the game. There are just people that are mean in general, noob or not, they're just jerks. If you want to try the game, just get it and play, have fun. It's the internet, if someone decides to say something just do your best to ig nore them, then report them at the end of the game and go on your way. it's fun if you don't let people bother you and have some friends to play with.

MOST of the time you won't deal with people that are going to give you hell for being new to the game, but you could always get unlucky. I'd say the community has gotten a lot better in the past couple years, mostly due to Riot implementing some changes. :p

These automatic monitoring/banning systems, the tribunal and the like really did some good for the community. But is can still be quite toxic, especially in ranked modes. This is the reason I prefer unranked, as there is less pressure and a bit fewer trolls there.

Some people can be mean towards noobs. There are people who "smurf" which means playing on an alternative account just to stomp new players. It's sad, but it happens. Don't know how Riot would stop this from happening though.

People are harsh to other people, not just to noobs. When frustrations get high, you'll get flamed even if you're a pro. It's best to not respond to them. They get bored eventually.

To be honest, I only had a total of 3 games which were entirely bad, and in which we swore cancer upon each other (damn son, right?), and that's pretty much about it. I even trolled in one of them. It really depends on your luck, but I wish you the best nevertheless!

ANY MOBA, ANY, can have and probably does have a negative element in it. People are toxic by nature when they compete (or why even have the "trash talking" in the dictionary? It's there. Look it up.)

People will troll. People will bitch, whine, and moan. But some times, I find very helpful people who explain item builds and how you should try to use your character. They make the game fun. Admittedly they are few and far between, but they still do occur.

Don't let this set you back. Experience the game. The learning curve is quite medium as far as MOBAs are concerned, and it's very tastefully handled. I just wish the community reflected this more. Hard to say it ever will though since the rise of ESPORTS and the scene has become even more TOXIC, even on other MOBAs.

Well, yes especially those kids that keeps annoying you when you don't let them pick what they want or you "steal" their lane. That's childish and they should go back to play with toys instead. That's one of the reason that would make me quit to play LoL.

Personally I just like trolling people who are raging, let them be toxic. If you've been on the internet for any long duration, you can or should be able to handle trolls and ragers, they are wasting their time and they only get more mad the more you egg them on. win-win situation. You might lose the game but at least you know they're always the one leaving mad.

That's a bit different from being an abusive *sshat though :p

Thank you everyone for your replies, appreciate it!

I do know that people on the internet are naturally hostile most of the time, I was just curious if what I read about LoL was true.

In the meantime, I've tried an "entry-level", easier MOBA, Heroes of the Storm, to get used to the whole concept. I've had a few good games at the beginning, people on my teams were naturally co-operating without chatting much or being abusive(since we were winning).

I understand that people get competitive but they should just chill :p There were games where people were just so hellbent on winning, they quickly became annoying but yes, you ignore them and go on with your day. When someone does something obviously stupid I can understand some of the rage but being angry at everything and everyone, all the time, is pretty pointless.

In order to play the ranked system in League of Legends you must first reach level 30 which can be achieved a number of ways including playing normal games or even playing against the computer. These game modes are more relaxed and are usually filled with less toxic people. However, if you do find a toxic person do not let them ruin your game experience and just simply mute them. Don't worry about making mistakes, just try to learn from them. The beginning of the game is a little confusing as you are learning how the game works and what each champion does. The more you learn, the easier it will be for you. On top of playing games, I would recommend watching guides on youtube which can help explain how the game is played.

The community is kind of scummy and rude to new players, but that is the case for most of the MOBA games out there.
Just give it a try and see how you like it!

As with all games, it depends on who you come across. In any game I've played there has been the select few that just want to be jerks to everyone. I tend to ignore them for the most part if I like the game. The thing is, you can't let others dictate what you do by feeling like they're going to belittle you. If you really sit and think about it, why does it matter if they do? They're words on a screen, people you do not even know, and who really should not change your frame of mind one way or the other. I get that if you're constantly being belittled the game can be less fun. I don't think I've ever encountered that in LoL. For the most part, people seem nice in chat when you're playing.

I just got out of three ranked games in which I was verbally abused for playing poorly. In third game, I muted everyone who were rude and we ended up winning.

No matter your level or rank, people are going to rage. You just have to use that mute button. The difficult thing about LoL is delegating time to understand each role, because most of your experience will come from actually playing different match-ups. Most people will expect you to do well unless you tell them you're new at a champ or a role. Some people might still be jerks because that's just the way they are, but others will be understanding. It also helps to just play with friends!

As for learning the basics, watching videos and playing co-op vs. ai or ARAM before playing against others is a good way to begin.

A part of life is dealing with toxicity and harshness of people.. it doesn't matter if it's in a video game or in real life - everyone faces it. You can simply mute those who are very toxic to you if necessary, but sometimes it's best to just deal with it. The League community is very large so you'll find both friendly and toxic players.
