May Gameplay Video Analysis

Part 1

At the start of the video we see what appears to be Arytom removing a new gas mask from a box.



This new mask has an inbuilt light and what seems to be Russian inscriptions.





Also we see that Arytom has finally invested in some new leather gloves which replaced the cloth type bandages he wore in 2033. This could be possibly part of stealth suit and may hint towards him finally becoming a Ranger.

As we move on it is not hard to spot Arytom's new watch and the comment made by the fellow ranger "I could use a good watch like yours".



It looks very cool and less confusing to determine how much air is left in a gas mask don't you think? I will assume that it either purchasable through the market sellers, a random item that is found from a dead body or if it was a gift from the Rangers that is explained in a cut scene.

In the E3 trailer we can see that Arytom still has his original watch so the above kind of makes sense but then that was pre-alpha code. I wouldn't want to start of with something as new and shiny as a digital watch though. I wonder how the stealth light would work with it though, as there was no red, amber, green indicator on the digital watch. All we could see was a brightly lit blue.



Next we see some action against mutants in the Metro. The video upload was only in 480p so the quality wasn't the best to bask in the glory of 4A's mutant creation.

We move onto Arytom throwing what seems to be an incendiary grenade. This is a new feature and throwing animation which kills of the Nosalis immediately.




What concerned me was that either Arytom wears flame retardant clothes and has "fire bombs" in his pocket at his disposal :laugh: or 4A missed a trick to include animation to make throwing such grenades needing a lighter to ignite the fuse.

Additionally it seems that the damage radius is only enough to kill one Nosalis.

2033 had more of a nuclear winter on the surface, so it had a snowy and light atmosphere. In the trailer we saw it looked totally different. The upload was in poor quality so it would have looked darker than usual.

 

Part 2

We begin to catch some of the survival exploration parts in Metro Last Light. Similar to the beginning of Metro 2033, we find Arytom this time lending a hand to force open the doors of an aeroplane.



The Duplet makes a return.



As does the Bastard gun.



Skeletons don't only exist in closets :lol:




Survival in the post apocalyptic world is still very much the main focus in the Last Light. Arytom discovers some scarce ammunition.




I love the attention to detail that 4A have given. Even though the upload wasn't the best, the seats of the plane can easily be seen that they were made from a cloth material.



We catch a glimpse of the familiar flashlight battery recharger. In my opinion it looks out of place with Arytom's newly acquired digital watch as mentioned in Part 1. I would love to hear your opinions on this.

Part 3

From what we have seen so far there is no doubt that Metro is still a survival horror game. Whilst Huw didn't use the best of analogies (bless him) describing Metro as "Trying to explain an elephant when your blind." :laugh: He did further elaborate on the gameplay of Metro Last Light.

Huw then explains the new gameplay mechanic where dirt, blood, debris gets on your mask, which you need to manually wipe off. This is something the player has to manage at all times and think and be aware of all the way through. This is a great addition and as Huw mentioned in the Aus Gamer Interview: "Getting things as realistic as possible is not always possible but we have to be consistent with what we do." I agree with him.



Spider blood which Arytom begins to manually wipe off. Yuk!



After a quick clean, everything is clear again.



Huw forgot to mention that the weather effects your vision through the gas mask as we can see Arytom wiping away precipitation.

Part 4

We see shots of the surface. Unlike 2033 which looked like the Metro World was in a nuclear winter - with the presence of snow, Last Light seems to take place in another season.



Normally thunder follows lightning but none was heard, but it was beautiful how lightning lit up the surroundings.



New Bolt action rifle. When fired it sounded like it packed a deadly punch.






Lightning clearly makes everything visible



More shots of the surface. What we can see here is not only the great atmosphere produced by 4A but how rain droplets are seen Arytom's visor and how the colour changes on his watch from yellow to red. I can only guess that this colour change shows how critical it is for Arytom to find more filters for his gas mask.




The bullet lighter makes a return. It was previously used to light up Arytom's map to pin point the direction of the next objective in 2033 but now it's a useful tool to incinerate spiders.

It appears we visit the surface during different times of the day as day light can be clearly seen.

Part 5 (Final)

Arytom like in 2033 suffers from psychotic flash backs. We see a cut scene of how those aboard the aeroplane came to their doom. Additionally there was a brief psychotic flash when Arytom entered the plane which means that the vague moral system is back. Can we expect two endings again?





We end this final part with the rangers. In the video Huw explained that during Arytom's adventure he would be fighting alone; with a companion or with the Ranger brotherhood.



As Huw said there are many elements to the Metro video games. Stealth combat was not shown as was the anticipated Multiplayer. These short videos usually just highlight combat, but from what I have seen Last Light is looking damn good. If you picked up on something which I missed or any mistakes I made then please share it with the forum.

Help yourself to the pics. I have more but then they were too dark to show the mutants which was also a key thing from the video. The ones I picked were probably the best out of the bunch.

Fraps can only capture snapshots at 1 second intervals, if it did it in 0.5 seconds I would have shown more stuff.
