In a Multiplayer Online RPG, the are two general of attacks - melee or ranged. Melee are those who rough it up in the inside with swords and clubs while ranged fighters don't want to go down and dirty in the inside. They have bows and arrows or projectile attacks. Melee characters generally have more HP than ranged characters. Which do you generally prefer?

Generally, I'll gravitate towards ranged. I pretty much only play healers, and choose the ranged damage off-spec for those classes. I don't really have that much fun playing a melee class and quit my warrior after getting really bored with it after a short amount of time.

I am definitely more of a ranged character-player. I like to be support and generally stick to healing my fallen teammates.

It really depends on which game we are talking about.
When I used to play Neverwinter Nights, I preferred to play melee. My strongest build was a fighter/dwarf defender/weapon master/rogue. My weapon of choice was dwarven waraxe. The most of the strong builds I have encountered in that game were also melee fighters with a few exceptions. Only a few people had cracked the secret of make strong ranged builds.... In general, those nukers and archers will be dropped when a melee get close, and the chance of melee get close is more than high.

In MMORPG such as Lineage 2, the ranged classes such as archers and nukers rules. They can drop melee players before they even get close. Under such system, very few people wanted to play melee classes. All the raids also depend on the nukers to kill the bosses... it's quite unfair I say but it's the way it is. In PvP too, the deadliest are the buffed archers and nukers. Melee won't stand a chance.

definitely melee, i love to be direct, and brutish in m gameplay, flash combos, heavy damages and spectacular finishers, thats all I live for, hate Archers and mages that cower behind their ranged attacks...

Do you realize that in most MMORPG the heaviest hitters are in fact archers and mages?
Melee's attacks don't do much damage compare to them.

In lineage 2 for example, fully buffed archers and nukers can one shot kill a melee on critical hit.
I have seen one shot kill in Neverwinter NIghts too from a mage. How many games where you see melee can one hit people?

Many of the game designs also require ranged classes to do well in even PvE. Many of the NPCs are quite strong, and the melee will always take damage after each kill... without constant healing (which isn't an option in many games unless you are in a team with a healer), only archers and mages can level up quickly without constant down time to rest for restoring HP.

I'd go with ranged attacks anytime, orb walking noobs is fun as heck. They try to close in the gap but by then they'll realize that their HP is already gone.

IMO I see ranged as damage dealers/support while melee are mostly tanks and bashers.

Who wouldn't? I love seeing melee attackers confused if they should either continue to try to close in on me or retreat. And it gets way more fun if my attacks had crits or slows on them.

That's not an option in the game I played.
In lineage 2, not only the ranged can attack from a distance, but the ranged classes such as archers are in fact much faster runners than the melee classes due to the archers wear leather armor, while the melee classes wear heavy chain mail or plate armors. So in a 1 on 1 fight, basically an archer can shoot and run, shoot and run... until the melee character is dead. The chance is the melee won't even be able to land a single hit before drop dead.

This is a method called "orb walking" I've seen Lineage 2 and I've got to say, melee people who are not well prepared will surely lose in a PVP situation.

We used to call it "kite".
Hit and run, hit and run, was basically the way how we level up our archers and mages in lineage 2. Although, only archers are fast runners who can keep distance between us and the enemies. Most monsters our level only require 2~3 shots to kill, so they would be dead before land a single hit on us.

In PvP, the players have higher HP and physical defense due to armor, but they aren't faster than the NPCs we kill on daily basis. So basically in any 1 on 1 fight, the melee is doomed when the opponent is an archer.

As an elf archer, we also have self buff called "wind walk". It boosts our running speed. Other players can only get this buff from buff class characters. But as our base speed is faster to begin with, they can't compete at all.

I know in some games such as Neverwinter Nights, archers do not hit very hard compare to melee characters, but in Lineage 2... archers hit the hardest amongst the fighters. With full buff, a single archer could drop a mage in 2 critical hits, and a heavy armor class in 3~4 hits. However, after some updates, mages could kill archers faster than archers could kill them. Some melee classes were given short bust of speed (temporarily faster than archer). That still did not change the fact how fast archers could kill them due to much higher damage per hit and could shoot before the fight start. Range > melee

Oh yeah I got it mixed up it is "KITE" the way that you let your enemy follow you without being able to land a single slash. "Orb Walking" is used in MOBA games like Dota 2 where you use special abilities of ranged heroes to prevent laning creeps on attacking you as you attack the enemy hero.

I tend to stick with more ranged myself, I have tried melee a few times but it just does not feel the same to me. I have about three of each over a few games but I still enjoy ranged just a tad more than melee.

We all have tried melee one time or another. :)
Melee are fun and powerful in games like Neverwinter Nights. But in most MMORPG I have played, there is little love for melee classes. Even in the PvE part of the games, since melee always have to get close to do hand to hand combat with the NPCs, the player will always take damage and have to get down to rest every so often. The leveling up process is much faster with ranged classes. Add the fact ranged have so much advantages over melee in PvP, there is little reason to play a melee in these games.

I don't mind playing melee of the game is actually fair for the melee classes.

I'll always go for melee, not just MMO but gaming in general unless the game is a shooter. I don't like ranged mainly because it feels just like using a gun. I prefer to go up close and personal, into the action so to speak. It's much more immersive for me.

Not to mention the gear of ranged people like wands and bows look way cooler than some of the clubs, axes and swords of melee people.

MMORPGs are third person. At least most of them.
Shooter games are mostly first person. There is a huge difference. Not to mention the animation effects as well as the shooting speed and range.

I like FPS games too, but I don't feel like I am playing the same thing when I use an archer in a RPG game. It is even more different when you use a mage who use spells to attack. All that casting and animation ... no way it's like shooting a gun lol.

I prefer to be ranged most of the time. I have great accuracy and don't mind to be off in the distance doing my thing, picking off victims quickly. I'd rather do that than just swing away in the middle of everything.

Um... aren't all the MMORPG would automatic target and hit when you select the enemy?
It's not like FPS game where the chance of hit is entirely depended on your aiming. There is basically no aiming in most of the MMORPG. You select a target, you hit "shoot" button, and the enemy always get hit unless he is twice your level and your arrows always miss due to his high "evasion" and your low "accuracy" which are both on the stats sheet rather than the actual player skills.
