Recent blog explaining Arenanet's stand on Micro-transactions...

It was discussed that to elliminate gold sellers, Anet would embrace the buying gold culture themselves. Theres in-game currency, and cash-shop currency, both can be purchased by each other. Do you guys think this is fair? Do you think this could be new era of gold shopping?

I, for one, love this system. It gives lazy ppl a good way to buy their gold through Anet, for a good cause, while it gives awesome & patient ppl (like myself) a cheap way to get all those cool cash shop items. By cheap, I mean paying virtual money for cash items, although Im sure the price in exchange will be considerably high.

I agree I like this idea a lot myself. It makes working long shifts at work pay off literally, as I can use my disposable income on gems if I'm feeling lazy.

Hopefully there won't be as much gold spam with this system. Although I can see Gold farmers undercutting the cash shop on their prices in an attempt to still attract people.

    I mean, they'd have to I guess.

I just hope it stays with "appearance" only items, not that it is going to be Pay2Win in the end like Diablo 3 & APB Reloaded.

It's going to be more, pay to be rich in game than anything else.

It will not be pay to win. Arenanet have never believed in that kind of philosophy.

(This post was mainly written because I had to write at least 3 posts in order to write this thread.)

Well if you look at the system they're suggesting, it really puts responsibility on the community to regulate people paying for power/farming gold/other abusive uses of the system.
The only way someone could potentially pay for power is to buy a lot of gems, sell those gems to other players for gold, and then use that gold to buy gear. It means they can only get gear that is available to everyone anyway, and they can only get it if people are willing to give them the gold for them gems they want.
I think the fact that the only way to make gold off real money is through other players wanting the gems will balance the system out, like it did in EVE.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Arena Net changes plans after the beta, and I hope they get a good system set up for release!

Its sow easy, just think about GW1 with this aspect of the game. It will be completely the same as in GW1 only in a different jacket. They know pay to win gives problems so they would never try that. This system is a fine system and im not affraid Anet will screw up with it..

Sounds like a happy middle ground for generating income to support the game. I'm all for it.

At the end of the day people are always going to be able to buy in game gold with real life cash, whether it be from external sources or via micro-transactions. Therefore having it in game is a much better idea as it takes the risk of someone being hacked and buying from un-trusted souces away and instead provides cash to a-net to further improve the game :D

I'm fine as long as gems are NEVER the ONLY way to obtain a crafting component, a resource, or gear. I don't mind that people buy gold in games - actually if they do it properly I should never know. There again I rarely make it to max level in most games and never raid.

The fact that trading in person is now out and instead everything is done by mail makes more sense now. Runes of Magic tried the gems/gold thing before and had horrible problems with fraud and trickery during trades. Forcing this type of interaction into the mail system lets folks know ahead of time that there's a paper trail so hopefully they don't try as much stuff. There again in this day and age every game action should be logged so you would think they could have tracked this stuff before (in the case of Runes of Magic).

Have you all seen the leaked stuff on guru? http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/cash-shop-items-leak-t32319.html?t=32319

I especially like the extra character slot, extra account bank slots, and extra bag slots.

    Looks good

Looks good to me however as long as they stcik with apperance only items. I wouldn't want alot of real money people running around with shop bought armour and weps. The idea of being able to reskin a weapon to one you prefer is awesome to me.

    I think microtransactions are awesome

I think the microtransaction plan is a great idea. If players don't want to buy some temporary buffs and cosmetics, then they don't have to pay for it, instead of forking out cash monthly for content they might not even play through. Plus I trust ArenaNet's judgment, based on how well they treat Guild Wars 2.
