So we all know they're out there, but how many of you have actually tried out the different alternatives to Minecraft? I know that at least one of them was around before Minecraft of course, but I can't remember what the name of it is.

I've actually tried quite a few games quite similar to Minecraft itself, and they were pretty fun, and I'm pretty sure there are quite a bit of alternatives.
Are you talking about Dwarf Fortress, by the way? I really can't quite put my finger on which game you're talking about.

Currently I play 7 Days to Die which is basically like minecraft with a modern day setting. It is pretty fun. There quite a lot of games like Minecraft, I don't really know of the names of the older ones though.

I've tried some but none of them seem that interesting to me. I dunno.. They just don't seem to do anything that minecraft doesn't already do..

You know you can make a functional computer in minecraft right? It's not set in medieval times or anything..

I have played terraria. Hated that game and the fact that it was a rip-off. Turned out to have a lot of neat features, mobs and other stuff. But it was way too intense for me.

I have tried Ace of Spades, which is a really interesting game. I like it due to the fact that it is not utilising the same game play direction and design as Minecraft, so it is not a total ripoff. Let me explain, ace of Spades is actually a first person shooter, albeit with sandbox elements. What sets it apart from other fps games are that you can modify the environment and shape it to your own needs, for assistance in battles or for combat decoration. Basically it is not even a survival game, just a fps game with a neat twist, so I play Minecraft much more for its survival game play.

I was actually referring to Infaminer. I believe that is the name of it anyway. Dorf Fort is an entirely different kettle of fish.

I don't know, I wasn't entirely certain which game you were talking about either, and while I had heard of the name of the game, I just couldn't remember so I looked it up on google and that's the only game people had mentioned. But, sorry about that; being someone who hasn't played either of those games I'm completely unaware of what the gameplay is like, I've clearly been led on by false information.

Space Engineers seems to use a twist of Minecraft. It is a really cool game where you get to make space objects like space ships out in space. You get to design them and power them using materials you mine from asteroids. It's a really fun game that you should check out if you're into Minecraft.

I think the closest alternative to Minecraft is definitely Terraria. It was on sale during the Steam Summer Sale for $1.99! I bought the 4 pack for $5.99 and gave 3 of the other copies to my buddies. Then, we started playing it together! It's definitely worth checking out if you're bored of Minecraft.
