Minecraft started it's development in 2009. That's five years ago and it's still being developed. When do you guys think development will stop and why?

I can only foresee two reasons for development of Minecraft to stop:

    1. Mojang moves onto a huge new game project that redirects their programmers and resources solely towards it leaving Minecraft to stagnate.
    2. Minecraft is no longer being played or generating much money so there is no longer any point in continuing development of the game.
Right now, and for the next couple of years, neither of those possibilities seem very likely to me, so I'm not worried :)

It won't stop. Maybe Mojang will run out of ideas, all bugs are fixed (nearly impossible, but well) and nothing else has to be done. But, there are still modders (like me) who code mods for Minecraft, so the development of Minecraft simply won't stop. There'll still be one who makes an awesome mod.

Other than that, I don't think Mojang will ever run out of ideas.

I do not think it's going to stop for many years yet. Right now there is a whole new wave of the new generation playing and loving Minecraft, and they might grow up to make more and more mods for the game. New ideas will keep coming in. I'm looking forward to see just how far the game is going to go.

I do not think Minecraft will stop updating. Not when their marketing of the game is high. If the day all youtubers stopped playing Minecraft, then they might shutdown. As of lately I do not think that would happen. It is just to good of a game to stop.

I don't think it will ever stop developing. There are a lot of things to add, many worlds to create and new feature to implement. The game will never 'die'.

They will never stop developing Minecraft. Because if they ever stop, the game would become boring, and the players would stop playing Minecraft.
They didn't even finish fixing bugs that exist since the game was created, like the black blocks bug.

As long as people are still playing, buying, and enjoying it, I don't see any reason for Minecraft development to stop. Also, there are still minor bugs that still need to be ironed out.

As long as there is demand for it, it won't stop. They now have PS3 and XBOX360 versions to care about, too, so it won't stop any time soon.
Who knows, maybe we'll even get a better MC version on the new consoles.

Also Xbox One. Cant wait to see what improvements they'll make, not only to the graphics but the gameplay. I think it really worked for Xbox 360 so it's not that far off.

With all the popularity of Minecraft right now, I really can't see development ending any time soon. The Xbox version has been surprisingly popular, and I think that will give it more time.

The only time minecraft will lose popularity is when minecraft 2 comes out :D

Mojang is running out of numbers, I'm already on 1.7.9 so it's only a matter of time until we get to 2.0...

As Notch has made very clear, the development of Minecraft will never finish. Minecraft is not a game like World of Warcraft, in which the developer releases the game, and creates the occasional patch. Minecraft is an incomplete game, that is constantly getting more and more features. Minecraft is much more open-ended because of the huge amount potential, due to it's sandbox genre.

Maybe it's safe to say that Mojang is also developing in sandbox mode then? :D

There are only a few things that would stop development of Minecraft. The eventual event of Minecraft dying out, not that that'll be anytime soon or if the creators want to move onto a new project and even if they do they may still work on both.
