What is the deal with this? Are they ditching the Java version they have been using for so long and have all of their content on? Or will they continue both versions at the same time?

Nah, Minecraft Java isn't going anywhere: they're still going to update it. The Windows 10 version is simply the Pocket Edition ported to PC; it's not going to get many fans.

Windows 10 version is basically the same as the mobile edition. Hopefully in the future the native C#/C++ version of the client is going to see the light, as the Java is incredibly tiresome and problematic. Especially now that .NET is basically multiplatform and since it's Microsoft's baby... that would definitely give it a push.

The Windows 10 version won't become the standart anytime soon, mainly because it's a lot harder to mod. It does run and boot incredibly fast though, and I hope that it will get mod support soon so we can move away from the slow client.

true, it would be cool to see the 10 version sky rocket into a whole new game, with more speed and compatibility.

It's a publicity stunt. By bringing Minecraft over to their "Windows Xbox app", they make the name of that app more popular, and therefore, more people will try that out. Also, money. They'll get a lot of sales before people realize what it actually is.

Yeah, this is sadly only a marketing stunt. They probably have a really big update coming up for the original Minecraft so they want to have as many people as possible involved.

Minecraft isn't done with Java yet, as others have already said. They really need to make the move eventually, though. Java is a pretty outdated platform, and Minecraft is already really poorly optimized. I have a pretty powerful gaming rig that can play most AAA games at maximum settings. With only a texture pack running (no shaders or anything), I get 60 fps with regular drops. It's pretty heinous.

They have an update coming for Java Minecraft too, that's true. Still, I don't see how it'll bring more people over to the original Minecraft if they want to grab people's attention for the shady Windows 10 version.

No worries, it will remain, no changes will be done in terms of gameplay, efficiency and performance.

Agreed. I have my doubts on Windows 10 and I'm not planning on replacing 7 at this time. Using Minecraft isn't going to make me upgrade any sooner.

I updated to Windows 10 recently and everything is working the same way as before so I don't see any why people complain that windows 10 is completely useless and slower than previous operating systems.

I'm pretty wary of Windows 10. Microsoft is pushing everyone to upgrade quite suspiciously, and I'm not sure they even care about piracy as much.

They will both be developed alongside each other, however whether Microsoft is willing to put the same amount of effort in for the older Java version remains to be seen. The Windows 10 version boots up much more quickly and is faster in performance overall although the lack of compatible mods (which is a big appeal of Minecraft in my opinion) will mean that most people will simply stick to the original client.

From what I've read regarding the deal Microsoft struck with Mojang, MS won't be messing with Mojang's work at all. So for all intents and purposes, Java Minecraft and Win10 Minecraft are still separate for the mean time. Microsoft does plan on unifying them at some point though that will probably be after the Pocket/Console/Win10 edition catches up on features and mod support to the Java version which will take a very long time.
