I have always wondered one thing about MMO games and their item systems. The item system usually consists of pre-defined items with set stats. This leads to lots of people using the same items and becoming cookie cutter builds.I am currently playing LOTRO and , while I love the game, it is an example of this.

My favorite RPG of all time is Diablo 2 because of the item system. I know that it eventually became cookie-cutter with all of the top tier runewords. At the early stages, however, the best items were random drops that happened to have a great combo of stats. Diablo 3 started this way too but is getting more flooded with standardized unique items as time goes on.

My main point is this. I wish there were more mmos or other games that had no unique set items with predefined properties but completely random drops instead. This would made getting the right combination very valuable and would encourage even more trading of items to get the one you were looking for. I think this would be a very fun thing.

What does everyone think about this?

Star Wars Galaxies had a completely crafter based society, so everything was a unique instance of an item blueprint and had unique stats. You could make two things out of identical materials, and they could turn out much differently.
