I'd say Gandalf is the most powerful wizard of middle earth (third age). Everyone agree? Not? I hear several people talk about Saruman being the most powerful. Is that possible?

If I know my Lord Of The Rings Lore correctly, Saruman is more powerful than Gandalf, as he was a white before Gandalf. If I remember correctly Sauron is also a wizard and he is more powerful than both of them.

Yep, I'm sure Gandalf even said himself that he was a better wizard or something along those lines. He definitely has more power/control than Gandalf. Just a shame he decided to become corrupt in the end.

It's a shame that he became corrupt. If he had fought against Sauran with Gandalf and the rest of Middle Earth then they would of had a much better chance in winning the war sooner.

Shame nobody seems to mention Radogast on this thread. As a wizard who communed mainly with the environment AND was immortal, his power would have been immense if he had chosen to wield it in any subtle ways.

Saruman was definitely more powerful than Gandalf. As for Radagast, he was my favorite wizard in the LOTR Universe, but I have to admit that his powers were not superior to any of the other four wizards...

As far as I an tell, in "The Hobbit" movie they portrayed him as a comic relief character... :(

He was a pretty cool character but he seemed to be always high and really ditsy. I never expected to him to be like he was, and the portrayal was a lot different from the books.

I prefer Gandalf the White :D He did seem to be more powerful when he came back from falling in the mines though, he seemed a lot more knowledgeable too.

In the order of wizards, the White was always the most powerful. Saruman was more powerful than Gandalf, but he forsakes the title of white when he decides to seek the ring for himself. When Gandalf returns to life after his battle with the Balrog, Saruman is cast out of the order and Gandalf becomes the White. After that, Ganfalf was clearly more powerful.

Saruman would be my answer, I would have to agree with those that said him.

I think that if we differentiate from Gandalf the White and Gandalf The Grey, then you've got a different discussion going on here. Due to the corruption of Saruman, he's certainly more cunning; however, Gandalf is still pretty kick ass. Imagine the terror that Gandalf could inflict, if he went to the dark side.

Saruman was more powerful until Gandalf returned as Gandalf the White. Sauron is, in fact, the most powerful wizard in Middle-Earth (well...was). ;)

I believe Saruman was originally a wizard of many colors but he was revised for the movies and games. Saruman was designated as the most powerful wizard but I think that Gandalf has had his moments. In my opinion, Gandalf's guile and wit make him a superior wizard to Saruman and his raw power.

Technically Sauran would have been the most powerful wizard, then the Witch King, then Saruman, then the good elf Galadriel, and so many others who were more poweful than Gandalf even after he became the white.

I feel like Gandalf is always portrayed to be superior to Saruman but in reality Saruman was white previous to Gandalf and even Gandalf accepts that he is inferior to Saruman. If Saruman wasn't corrupted then he would still be the most powerful but as of now it is somewhat of an even fight.

I think that Gandalf's real strength was his love for all living things. The other wizards lacked his wisdom and charm. This is what made him prevail above all others in my opinion.

It's impossible to compare Gandalf the White and Saruman because they both are white wizards. So both are equally strong.
Sauron might be a stronger wizard because he was so powerful once but not having a body really is a big downside so I wouldn't think he is the most powerful.

I also agree that Saruman is more powerfull than Gandalf. And if he didn't become corrupt, I believe that he and Gandalf could solo so many armies.
