In the wiki, there's not that much on the food of the metro. Apparently they live on a diet of rats and moss...

So I'm wondering, is mutant meat edible? The lurkers seem like overgrown rats so surely they should be no problem. And as well, how do they manage to feed those pigs? Surely mutant meat is a cheap method of maintaining crops. :pop2:

And one thing: in the wiki it states that there are more luxurious yet still affordable crops like mushrooms but the most extravagant are things like tomatoes and potatoes. I'm no gardner but I assume potatoes and mushrooms can be grown under similar circumstances.

Well in the "Venice" station you can see an old woman cutting up one of those scorpion looking things. Now whether she's doing it for the meat or it's tough shell I do not know...

Once the pigs give birth a few times, they probably cut them up and use the meat. Exhibition is known for it's mushroom, mushroom tea, and other mushroom concoctions. When you walk by the kitchen in VDNkH and the two women are cutting meat and talking about men ("So go for it, girl!") you can see big slabs of unknown meat - presumably from the pigs.

I'd assume that Nosalis meat, or meat from any other mutant would be highly contaminated/irradiated and not safe to eat.

    ... -> Mushrooms -> Pigs -> Feces -> Mushrooms -> Pigs -> ...

M2033 mentions pigs, chickens, mushrooms and multivitamin pills.
M2034 mentions wilted cucumbers, potatoes and tomatoes.
M2035 and MLL will add more.

Everything else was made up by the expanded universe writers and is essentially a fanwank.

Oh man, I'm just absolutely loving those edited pictures of yours, Komodo!
But yeah, I noticed that woman cutting up the meat off a mutant, I'm pretty certain I mentioned it in the thread where the gameplay video was posted :)

Well mushrooms are fed to the pigs and the pigs feed the humans. Mutant meat would pretty much instantly kill you. Remember the reason why they are mutated. You can grow potatoes underground since they do grow without light so they can be grown. Anything else most likely wouldn't be.

Dimitri was asked this question awhile ago.
His response was: there are three possibilities in a post apocalyptic world. The best , like the one in fallout where there are mutants but you can eat the. The medium one where there are no mutants and we need to resort to cannibalism. And the worst one, like in metro where there are mutants but they're inedible AND kill us. So we resort to needing to farm and in some cases cannibalism.

Is it me or does the world of metro seem to be getting better? (it rains in the demo)

  9. Well, there are a few reasons why the nuclear spring might be even worse than the nuclear winter.

Sorry for derailing the thread, but you really haven't noticed that until now? xD

Anyway, I assume cooking the mutant-meat won't remove the radiation the same way boiling water removes any bacterias?
And Aaron's thought about using the mutant's skin (shell) as armor was a very well-thought idea, actually. Scorpions are known for having thick, hard and unpenetratable armor. In Clash Of The Titans, the main character is given a shield made out of the armor of those gigantic scorpions. Those mutant-scorpions may prove to work the very same way :)

They live off mushrooms and pigs in most parts of the metro. Some of the Universe of Metro 2033 novels also suggest pretty interesting ideas. For example, in Piter, there is a flooded station where people live off the underwater mutants (and the mutants also devour any human that falls in the water). It's worth mentioning that Venice - the flooded station in Metro: Last Light - is basically a carbon copy of a station that appears in Piter. So it's funny how some Metro canon purists despise the series, when it's the books from that series that are now inspiring the developers and Dmitry Glukhovsky.
Have you even read any of the Metro 2033 Universe books? Yeah, sure, some of them go a bit too far from the lore - but the ones that don't... well, damn, some of those are even better than Metro 2033 and Metro 2034. Piter, for example, is absolutely brilliant. It's narrative is more coherent, more unpredictable and more exciting. The protagonist of that book is also more likeable than Artyom ever was.

Hasn't anyone learned anything from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series? Whenever you become highly irradiated, just dink a bottle of Cossacks vodka; or as an alternative, you could marinate the mutant meat in a tub of the vodka, allowing it to soak up all of the wonderful flavors and nutrients provided by the Russian Beverage. Ahhh, Russian cooking 101.

if you read the book they feed the pigs mushrooms. but if mutant meat is edible i would say not. since they live above ground they probably have diseases or radiation in them. also since most are just mutated animals they prob aren't very appetizing, but since the people in the tunnels eat rats and moss they prob wont care much what there eating, as long as its food. the delicacy's are the pigs and chickens and real tea.

I would probably try mutant meat; I think it would be like eating a city pigeon.
