I got this message when I tried to launch today...

"You are running an old version of Java. Please consider using the new Minecraft installer which doesn't require Java, as it may make your game faster."

The only difference is Bootstrap 100 vs 5, and using a newer java version....nothing about it online but it comes from Mojang so I assume it's legit?

I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you're using a legit version of Minecraft and the message comes from Mojang. I never pay attention to such things. I just fire the game up or update whatever and then get the game going, so I don't know about the installer itself. xD

Since Microsoft has purchased the game, they have a new installer to better match with their standards for games. I ran the new version on my kids' laptops and it significantly improved the FPS - they were quite happy. ;)

Personally I don't even use official launchers. I use MultiMC, which has built in mod and resource pack installers, and a screenshot manager, as well as making it so much easier to have multiple versions installed at the same time (which is very important right now, with the 1.7/1.8 thing)

I don't think they've pushed any actual game updates yet, and a lot of the core developers of the game have left, so it'll be interesting to see what they do with it now.

Maybe it's something that Microsoft introduced. I mean, they do own the game now, so maybe they changed up the installer.

It does seem silly to push out a new launcher that doesn't use java, considering you'll need java to run the game anyway.

Ironically it does make the game so much faster and less buggy. I use it every time now :).

I think they changed it to increase the load speed and perhaps to make gathering all the info for the tabs a bit faster or more resource efficient from either their end or ours. Or perhaps they did it this way because it makes it faster for the app to load cause not using java makes it able to load in the background instead of having to load the launcher, and then the game too. I'm not sure ha ha.
