Man, that reviewer's "way with words" wasn't very complimentary to M:LL. First words were, "M:LL won't be for everybody." Then he said, "This picks up after 2033's 'bad ending'..." which could be misunderstood as him saying 2033 had a bad ending, like Mass Effect 3's bad ending. Then "not fun in the strictest sense...".

..and of course he likes the [out of place] minigun. Someone here should write up an explanation of how the 2033 combat system worked to help educate this guy and others.

As far as the trailer goes, i hear too many of Metro 2033's sound effects, which isn't good for people like myself who have played it a few times.

If you get tired of metro 2033 sound effects then you are tired of life :p

I know what you mean Thane. The reviewer is definitely not one of us hardcore metro fan and carries somewhat streamlined view of the whole franchise, which is understandable.

The concept of having a minigun seems bit inappropriate but it certainly isn't an impossibility. I'm confident that the 4A would balance the usage of minigun accordingly so it's not just some run-and-gun.

I posted a question to the devs the other day regarding the changes/improvements in sound department (IMO, sound is incredibly important in game atmosphere and immersion, which would even further improve Metro experience). Hopefully they will cover that topic soon.

Sounds and music is very important. I think that military grade amo in weapons should pack a more beefier sound as when firing in dark you weren't always sure what amo you were firing with. If you wasted precious military grade then you'd be pissed off.

Agreed. M2033 did decent on the sound department such as music and ambience but the effects such as reloading, firing, etc. were very bland samples. However, I was really glad to hear improvement when Artyom reloads VSV on the E3 demo.

Probably one of the biggest wishes I have on the sound is amplifying or implementing ambient sounds (therefore improving sound stage). I.e. when you are in a tunnel, you hear hollow wind blowing and echoing.

That would be good including those, if the sound is encoded in Dolby then you'd get that spatial awareness. Sometimes in metro 2033 Arytoms footsteps sounded as if someone was walking behind. I hope the devs get to answer your questions, because after E3 everything will go quiet again.

Haha, there were countless times when my own footsteps freaked me out. I would turn around frantically when stepping on the chair because it would make such loud wooden noise.
By simply watching the E3 2011 demo footage, it sounds like they definitely improved the spatial awareness. I just hope they keep it up and not neglect the sound quality. I've also asked if it would be possible to switch the sound output ingame (Ranging from Headphones, 2.1, 5.1, etc.).

Don't get me started on psychedelic optical illusions now, I had to see plenty of those while going on trips

I like the 2033 sounds......when playing 2033. I just don't want to hear all the same effects over and over, like in the Half-life series. It really started to grate on me after HL2. They only changed the sounds in Portal 2. If i hear the 2033 laugh track again, that would be bad, it plays like 10 times in 2033. All the metal scraping, shifting and bending sounds I hope are redone because i know exactly how they sound.

I'm also hoping for good ambient sounds. I hope they look at, or have noticed to work done by the Battlefield sound developers. They placed an emphasis on examining and portraying the environment's effect on the sounds you hear

I raised the question last year about gun sounds in the metro tunnel system, that they should sound more echoey (if there is such a word). I was told that it was pre alpha code and they were working on it.

Thane, that is quiet precisely what I'm hoping for. It does not have to be in the tier that Battlefield series is in but if the 4A devs can focus on the sound emphasis on environment and atmosphere (this is what Metro is geared for in the first place), I think it can really be striking for the gameplay.

For example: When Artyom is going through the surface, there were couple instances of wind blowing and caused the view to subtly tilt (due to the force of wind). In addition, when he is going through the tunnels in certain areas where there are machineries or ventilations, there would be ambient noise from air and gas. Emphasis on those and implement spatial awareness would be all I could ask for.

The screams from the singing pipes should have been more horrifying.

Didn't the gamespot interview say that the wind slightly affects your weapon handling? Oh another excuse to watch it again lol

Music and sounds can make and break a game. The orchestral music and different weapon sounds made COD WAW my favorite and most memorable shooter.

Sound plays such a vital role and add to the atmosphere.
