In another life (not that far from mine), I would have been playing MMORPGs for ten years by now. Since I'm not that person, I have like zero experience playing. But, I want to get into it.

I feel a strange kinship to you all though, if that means anything. I've been into both the science fiction and fantasy genres. I haven't read any actual science fiction novels though.

Please recommend something that'll give me that real MMORPG experience, maybe not too technical if that's a thing. Just something good.

Maybe you should go with a classic in this genre: World of Warcraft. This game was and is by far the king of the MMOs with the most active population even tough the subscribers is decreasing year by year. Also WoW it's good also if you don't really have a decent PC to play with.

World of Warcraft is kind of obsolete though. You'd want something more "neological" such as Guild Wars 2. I don't know whether they kept paid subscriptions, but give it a try nevertheless. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it easily. :)

Can a game that millions of people still play daily really be obsolete?

Guild Wars 2 or World of Warcraft are both completely fine for starters. You're going to get a good experience in WoW since it is a really complex game.

Okay, thanks for the advice everybody. I'll do a little more research and decide between the two.

You could also try Rift. It is almost the same as World of Warcraft, only with game mechanics taken from Guild Wars (Rifts) and is really gorgeous graphics wise. Also, it is totally free, so you won`t have to spend a dime to start playing.

The most important thing to know is that MMORPGs are basically two games in one.

You have the leveling experience, which in most cases is almost like playing a single player game. You can group and do dungeons now and then, but for the most part, you are playing similar to a game like Skyrim.

But when you reach the level cap, then it is almost a completely new game, where there is very little solo content and most major advancements to your character require that you do group content. Most games do allow you to advance a little big by playing solo, but you are extremely limited.

Try RuneScape, i think it's the best MMORPG of all time and what's the best thing about it is it's a browser based MMORPG so no download needed you can play it straight from your browser. This game is really fun especially if you're just starting, there's so many things to do and people to meet. Seriously, go to RunScape site and start playing, you won't regret it. :)
