I just started playing the game recently and I'm a little overwhelmed by it. Are they any tips for a newbie? I've just been running around collecting and building things so far.

Build a chest at your home: Planks of wood in a donut shape. Then put all your valuables in there. Make two and put them side by side to make a large chest.

Try not to care your valuables with you when you're going on an adventure. Also press F3 and note the coordinates of your home. They are marked by X, Y and Z. Also note the compass and which way you're facing.

Right off the bat, gather enough food to last you a few days. Break grass to find seeds, create a Hoe and till the dirt and make a farm. Plant the seeds. Fertilize them with Bonemeal (one square of bones) to quicken their growth. Make bread from the wheat (3 pieces across). If you find sheep, note their location and don't kill them. Later when you get iron, make shears and cut off their wool to make a bed (3 pieces wool top, 3 pieces planks bottom). This will allow you to sleep at night and pass time to morning in SP.

Try to upgrade to Stone weapons and utilities as soon as you can. Use iron for armour, for maximum protection. Stick with stone things until you get plenty enough iron to make weapons and utilities out of.

Keep your hunger down and your health full. If your hunger bar is down by one whole 'food slot', then you won't regenerate health.

First off, welcome to the world of Minecraft! I hope you have many happy hours playing it!

I found Minecraft overwhelming at first too. I wasn't used to sandbox style games where you are just dropped into the middle of it and have to decide for yourself what you are going to do. tinybutnotfangless gave a good run down of what to do to establish a stable starting point. As to where to go from there, and I apologize if this doesn't sound too helpful, is up to you! Look at the Minecraft wiki, watch youtube videos, and read forums like this one to get an idea of what is possible in the game.

Watch some lets-plays. You will see some skilled players play and it should help you pick up some new tricks. I would also check out the Minecraft wiki for crafting recipes. It's very useful.

I second the entrance into creative mode. I screwed around with that a bit before I had a general idea what to do, then I looked up a few online tutorials. I am not even remotely skilled at the game yet, though. I only recently came to it myself.

Playing on creative mode will give you a chance to get the hang of everything, without the consequences. Just take some time to get the hang of things and then you can dip your toes back into survival.

Welcome to the game! Its time to build your first dirt house, hit some dirt off the ground and make a small 5x5 box, then add a roof. Inside your house you may want to add a bed, which consists of 3 wool and 3 wooden planks, and maybe a chest, which consists of 8 planks.

I hope you enjoy the game!

I'd recommend playing with a group of friends unless you're just a huge fan of building things, but even if you are I'd expect that to eventually get old. Playing with friends makes the game much more entertaining imo. Also, if you get lost just look up a guide, there's no shame in doing so lol.

Watch some YouTube videos or streams and see what they do. When I first started, my friend was the person who introduced me to the game and also the person who showed me the ropes. You can practice in creative mode at first, then to peaceful, then just play normally - it doesn't take very long to learn how to play.

There are tons of great youtube videos for this but basically, just get shelter and make yourself a crafting table and wing it! There are tons of different ways you can play and that's why the game is so popular! Enjoy and let me know if you have any specific questions!

Another tip: Take your time. Search some minecraft wiki's about how to make tools etc. You can try for yourself, but there's no way you'll be able to make all those objects by yourself.

The biggest tip would be to play on peaceful for a few days. This will give you time to explore materials, tools and caves without dying all the time. Once you think you are ready, put the difficulty up to Easy or normal

Watch videos of other youtubers playing! it's pretty entertaining since they're pretty funny and you can get pretty good ideas of waht and how to build. Watching Etho play was what got me into playing minecraft in the first place! Besides that, make sure to survive and not lose your stuff!

Definetly check out the Minecraft Wiki. I've been playing for years, but still refer to it everytime I play. Also, Youtube is a great resource for guides and inspiration for building. Good luck and have fun! Welcome to the game!

A few tips I have would be to watch some streamers on Twitch.TV. While most of them will not be doing beginning things, it will still give you a good idea about some game mechanics to copy and some things you can do to improve quickly.

Another would be to get a friend to come play with you. That way you're not just struggling alone but can figure things out quicker together.

I doubt streamers will help anyone new because they mainly play Minecraft with tons of mods like tekkit or hexxit so it won't be showing new players how the normals unmodded version of minecraft works

Play on safe, don't start building huge structures etc. Don't try to make buildings beautiful yet, because you most certainly will die. Play around with the different objects you can make. Try to survive as long as you can.

Online play helped me too. Only play online if you mastered the basics + basic building. Online play helped me make efficient structures and buildings, I learned to work with redstone and about combat & magic. First time I successfully went to Nether too.

I disagree with most of what people have said here. Yes, the Minecraft Wiki is an amazing tool but I think the game is much better discovering for yourself. Explore, experiment, learn from your mistakes and have fun. If you run out of things to do and you're stuck then sure, hop on the wiki and learn something new to do but I know a lot of people wished they never looked at it.

Just have fun with the game first, but it might be too late for that. Oh, and don't play on peaceful mode unless you can't handle easy or normal. Well you can still have lots of fun of course doing what they said, but a fresh starting experience is even better.
