Warning, long post. This is kind of a rant, kind of an elongated question. So, here we go.

We're a selective group, ladies and gentlemen. Maybe when we saw an ad for Metro 2033, the setting or story piqued our interest. Maybe some of you are post apocalyptic junkies like myself. For many of you it could be a different reason. But when we picked up Metro 2033, and we started playing it, we didn't stop because of some minor bug. We didn't stop playing when we got stuck on Frontline. We didn't stop after continuously being detected at Black Station. We kept going. We all genuinely love Metro 2033 and it's story, and I love that about this community.

That being said. For newcomers, are they going to embrace Metro Last Light? Will they explore, like we did? Will they even play Metro 2033 before getting Last Light? It pains me to see comments on forums and web articles saying, "I may get Metro 2033 but IGN said it was a bad game", etc etc. But more importantly, will we accept some new player into our midst who doesn't know anything about the game, let alone the novel? Maybe, maybe not. Like I said, we're a selective group. Just thought I'd bring this up, leave it in the threads, and see what happens.

Chat away my friends, chat away.

Um i was expecting something else..but i got your point..

Well i think i will start by telling you guys how i played this game for a first time. It wont be nice, and you probably will think of me as i total noob, but here it goes...

So i bought the game, ok ok i wont lie, i downlounded the game from legal working :)laugh:) pirates site, because i really didnt knew what to expect from it. So yeah dl to my PC and starting playing: at first the atmosphere and story itself got me deep into the game. Everything was great: the lighting, the weapons, the hand genarator. Ok so later in the game i met Burbon ( great characte). Got robbed by a hoker ( i knew something was fish'ie but i couldnt help myself. Then somehow i got lost in one chemical waist pit in the mission with Burbon near that station that refused to let you in until you got ealt with all those nosalies. Lost most of my filters, because i didnt knew that very time you take of your gasmask you automaticaly replace your filter. And i lost most of my gold ammo in the way to that station, because in intense actions moments it was really hard to see if you are shooting your money away for dirty rounds because on PC version if you hold '' r " for too long it automaticaly lounds your money into the gun. So i didnt had cash for new filters or ammunition in that sation. Then it was surfice...and again i got totally lost in it again : DDD. After sufociating for like 10 times in a row and after inproprate amount of swearing i turned the game. But once again after my friend asked how was the game i decided to come back to it. And from there on (well i somehow menaged to find a gasmask few seconds from sufocating ) the game was kinda pleasing. Well, yaeah, i tottaly didnt heard how Melnik told you to watch dirrectly to librarians eyes. So i juts killed everyone i met in the path ( took me longer than to finish what was left of the game) and yes i got lots in the library to... Well and yeah if not the slames and tons of swearing the last part of the game would be great. And yeah i was pissed when i got the bad endidng, even knowing that the black ones arent that bad ( i didnt run away from them in Artyom mind games).

The story and atmosphere kept me rolling and i finished the game one more time ( this time i didnt failed so badly). And if any of you where waiting , yes i bought the game, because what i do if i like the game.

Wow this went of topic badly. But i think i will write what i think of newcomers who didnt played metro 2033 or read the novel in the later post of mine ;)

well, I had the game to start with in XBOX360, got it as a present from my OH, but when I tried to play it I got very sick (FPS on console do that to me) so I left it for a long time. Then I discovered Stalker, and found that I loved apocalypitic games, so decided to get Metro for the PC. fisrt time I played it, got sick again, but didn't give up, 'cuase I've heard about Metro through the Stalker forums and was intrigued.

so I found out how to change the FOV in game and gave it another go. first playthrough, I got lost practically everywhere! suffocated a few times, got caught in 'frontline', got killed many times as well, but fell in love with the game almost instantly, and as they say, the rest is history.

My first playthrough wasn't that bad, actaully. I didn't suffocate, but I did get lost a few times. I didn't die that much either, but went gun 'n' blazing on all the missions. I did not know the location of the ranger stashes, so I was kind of low on ammo, and that's even though I was playing on "Easy".

I got the game when Steam had a THQ-sale half a year ago. I also got the book shortly after, and it was/is one of my favourite books.

I'm relatively new to Metro 2033 and the whole Metro universe in general. I finished reading the book maybe a month ago a absolutely loved every bit of it. In response to Teddy Picker's question: will new players embrace Metro like they did, then I think yes. If they were genuinely sucked in to the whole idea of Metro, loved the book (if they have read it), adored the game and found the whole thing really very addictive and intoxicating like me, then they will be posting comments, reading posts and playing the game with the same enthusiasm as you Matro veterans when you first played the game and/or read the book.

You're new, you like Metro, so I love you. It just angers me when some ignorant CoD fanboy doesn't like Metro, because you have to stick with it or you won't like it. And truth be told, I was drunk and slightly angry at a specific friend when I wrote this thread. But I'm glad that you're getting into Metro. Two years ago, I was a new fan myself.

Two years ago, I didn't even like the game. I'd even go as far as to say I hated it... It took the Ranger Pack to convince me that Metro 2033 was the second best current-gen gaming experience to date (albeit still a flawed one). Since then: I've read the book, bought a shirt (which I usually never do), my desktop backgrounds colection shows a 2033 wallpaper every 48 hours, I listen to the soundtrack quite often and I can play the main theme perfectly with my eyes closed on the guitar. And yes, I know I sound like a fanatic.

I know how you're feeling bro, and to me - I just like to think of it like this. Besides the devs at 4A and the people who went behind making the game, we are the true vets - the viciously loyal group of followers. To me, we are the rangers in the metro of fan-dom  And while I do see newcomers as parasites for the most part, suckling from the power teet of a franchise that is not respected enough - their actions (even if a bit disrespectful of the first game,) allow 4A to thrive, and continue on with the series.

When the general discontent for all of the unknowledgeable wannabe-Metro vets settles in, I like to relate the Metro series to the first two Alien movies. Metro 2033 is to Alien as Last Light will be to Aliens. Although it appeals to a broader audience, it is still fu**ing awesome in it's own way. In the end, I think Last Light will pay very good homage to the first game.

    /rant

Excellent way of putting it Pip, I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm glad they'll be putting in references to Metro 2033 so I can silently laugh to myself about it, while my friends will have no idea what they mean. I'm also expecting some sort of homage to Bourbon.

It depends on the newcomer. Is he willing to be a part of the group? Is he, even if he hasn't had the chance to play or read the book, willing to accept our opinion, and is willing to give his own? Is he willing to learn to us old stalkers about the metro? And more importantly: Does he have the self-confidence to enter and venture to the unknown that is www.lastlightforum.com just like we did when we were n00bs?

All these questions come into mind...

    LOL

Alright, serious-time: I was introduced to Metro 2033 by my brother, who was also the person who introduced my to games like Stalker, ArmA, and all that good stuff. Personally, it was an extremely mind blowing experience, and much more realistic than CAUL OV DUTAAAAY MURDERN WURFUR TWOOOOO (OOHH SO RE-A-LIS-TIC). Yes, I am serious. Kids these days don't know what they're talking about. Even when they're older than me. xD

I found the game hard and confusing at first because they didn't do a very good job at directing the player and explaining Artyom's goals. Also I found the shooting mechanics to be frustrating at times. After getting over these small humps I found a really great game.

I love post-apoc movies and games so I have to experience them all. I found myself coming back to the game and quitting out of frustration a few times but now I really love it:laugh:.

The worst part is when they think they know something about firearms

Exactly. I've got a few friends whose only knowledge of firearms comes from CoD. Which, for example, means that the SA80 is an "Enfield", the REC7 is a M4, and the Barrett M107 is a Barret .50 cal.

Okay, and about the newcomers: I've showed the game to three of my friends during a LAN-party. One of them already had it, the second instantly bought it and the third one will buy it the next time steam has a sale.
One of my friends (He is the THE_Dark_Hunter in here, never active though) been playing it alot, and even though it's obvious that I'm a little more into the story than him, he still has a lot of fun playing it, plays on RHC, gets the "Enlightened" ending and knows basically all the stashed. And he is a CoD-player.

"I think they should have the ACR in Last Light" is the worst I've seen.

But that's good to hear. I play CoD too (purely for Nazi Zombies), but that doesn't mean I can't play other games. It's just when CoD players refuse to accept any other kind of game that doesn't play exactly like Call of Duty that gets me mad.

Okay, excuse for saying this, but what the fuck. What kind of moron will ever think of seeing the adaptive combat rifle in a post-apocalyptic russia? That idiot really needs to start reading www.world.guns.ru instead of playing ****-of-Duty Modern Sh*tf*ckstupid and think they're an expert in guns. IDIOTS.

Though, I wouldn't mind seeing a whole new assortment and different varieties of rifles, like says 4 skins of Aks, 4 skins of vals, maybe 4 skins of revolvers and bastards and all that.... It increases immersion, and makes me feel like I'm in the metro, with a whole load of unique items to choose from. xD

Yeah, having perhaps a different camo of Kalash or VSV would be nice, although the Bastard should stay as is; for obvious reasons :D

I'm really excited to see this new shotgun-pistol. It would allow me to exchange the Duplet for perhaps a Hellsing while still giving me that close-quarters edge with mutants.

Where did you see this? I'm looking for something to boil my blood today and get me angry and violent over the protection of Last Light, like a mother over her children haha/

I actually think I found out about the game while trawling Wikipedia randomly. Read the plot summary too. Some time later (a few weeks ago) I pirated the book and read it (it's awesome." Then, I pirated the game. Due to various circumstances I deleted the illegal copy then bought it legally from Steam. Beat it on normal and got the bad ending, then (with help from guides) beat it either yesterday or today (can't remember) on Ranger Easy and got the good ending. next I think I'll play through on normal, to luxuriate in the ammo pickups. I'll miss the high damage though.

Epic post is epic :D But can you say why you needed to pirate the book from the net. In Lithuania is cost like 10 Eur for 500 pages ( it isnt that much)
