No hype - detrimental for this game?

With nearly 6 months before the release there is no hype built around the game. The Division is not really that advertised anywhere and I think this may be quite bad for the title. Still, it's from a reputable company and they can make it work.

It's in a tough position because even if there's not a lot of hype, I feel like the expectations are really high. It's been through three E3's already and people hope it doesn't go through a fourth. I still feel like gamers are still interested, and there's still a few articles popping up here and there on a regular basis. There is some hype, it's just kinda hard to gauge.

When it's released, obviously reviews will play a part, but I think word-of-mouth still has more influence. That's what will decide the success of this game and that's when the hype would happen. So it might not necessarily be detrimental, but could be costly for Ubisoft if the game doesn't do well.

I just hope the game does fine and has a good playerbase.. that's all I ask! :p It has a lot of potential and from what I've seen on the gameplay videos I'm sold on it, just waiting for a couple more reviews.

I think Ubisoft is focusing on the games that are releasing soon, like the new Assassin's Creed and Rainbow Six Siege. And both are coming out, like, really soon. After that they'll have plenty of time to promote The Division. I really hope they don't delay the game but I don't think it'll happen.

I think it's for the best. I'd rather have an under hyped game that is good than an over hyped piece of crap. Besides, Ubisoft is like a household brand now when it comes to games so I'm pretty sure this game would sell well even without the massive marketing.

Too much hype now will not necessarily help The Divisions sales come release date next year. There are quite a few titles they have coming out before then and we also have the marketing frenzy of Christmaas just around the corner. A nice sharp marketing campaign for a couple of weeks before release should have just as much benefit for sales as a long drawn-out campaign starting now, but at a fraction of the price. Theres too much hype for so many titles now, it can only lead to dissapointment if the game isn't as good as its been hyped to be.

I'd personally never even heard of the game until becoming a member here. But I suppose those who follow this particular company/game producer are the ones who are more aware while it's in development stages. Then they'll have a bigger marketing push when Christmas comes around...

I had a hard time hearing about it as well. But once it's out and people can give first hand reviews, word will spread and it will become more popular.

Well 6 months is still a pretty long time for marketing. I think they're focusing more on the upcoming releases like AC and Rainbow Six.

But as far as I'm concerned, I think the reason why they're not hyping the game so much is that it's not ready yet. Although the demos look good already, you can definitely see some tight hold on some of the elements in the game.

I think it's not going to be a huge issue since the game has been pushed to a 2016 release so there's plenty of time for hyping up the game. But I think it's healthy for a game to not have that much hype, let the players hype up the game when they got their hands on it and when the experience is good.

Thinking about hype and this game, they do need to get the hype machine in gear because ultimately it is an MMO, and for an MMO to be successful, you need players! If no one hears about this game, and the online community is sparse, this game will die pretty quick.

I would be more concern with how they finish the game rather than them hyping them up. Then again, I tend to play games that fly below the radar most of the time, so I'm not terribly bothered by the fact that there is little word out on the game.

Thats is a bit of a concern. Do you think Ubisoft might be just waiting for Christmas to get out of the way before they really ramp up the hype just before release. It would be a lot harder for them to get attention for The Division from now until Christmas and maybe they are just going to hype it when theres less of a consumer frenzy going on.

With the failings of AssCreed Unity hanging over Ubisoft's shoulders and with new titles out pretty soon I can understand they are not putting all there advertising into The Division. I agree with this as a practice. If all the games out soon flop then it will have a massive knock on effect for both moral and budget available to the people currently working on The Division.

The hype train will come eventually and I think it's for the best they don't hype everyone up too early.

Yeah. After all they have very little competition in the period they chose to release the game. They're going to submerge us with information and gameplay videos after the holidays for sure.

I'm hoping that's the case. I'm really rooting for this game because I do feel that it's somewhat outside of the norm. These are the types of games I like seeing, that really push things and do them differently. I'm hoping it doesn't go the way of Defiance, where the concept was awesome (having an MMO and a TV show) but it never really took off, or at least I don't think it has. I'm hearing nothing about Defiance these days.

Yes defiance has sunk more or less without a trace as far as I know, pity really, I thought it was OK. I'm glad to hear you're hoping for great things from The Division, I also have a feeling that this could be the game of the decade, theres something very next-gen about it and I think that it is a forerunner of the standard of games of the next few years.

I think that the lack of hype is fine, since it is a very niche game. The thing is, those of us who are waiting for the game are excited for it to come, and have high expectations. This game is going to set the bar for future RPG games, and all of our high expectations might be what ends up to make the game flab.

But on the other hand, this and blade and soul are the two games that I am super excited for! I have a good computer that I'd enjoy using for stuff like that, especially with how the graphics will look like.

I think it's wise for them to not hype too much just yet. There's still delays here and there, building up a hype would force them to release the game at an exact time (which would be bad because there'll be clash in releases and most likely bugs they need to fix), because delaying would hurt it and the effort put into building the hype itself will go down the drain. They have a lot of time to hype up and advertise the game.
