One dimension or multi-dimensions?

I remember a while ago when I played the trial of D&D online, I was with a team trying to go for a quest. Just as we were entering a dungeon, I got disconnected or something like that if I remember correctly. After I went back and entered the door again, I found myself in a completely different dimension (same dungeon, but different dimension as the other players who had entered earlier). So basically there are unlimited (maybe there is a limit, but we don't know how many) dimensions for every dungeon to avoid too many players enter the same place and overcrowd it.

I can understand the idea behind it, but I was annoyed. I actually like the idea of there is only one world for everyone to play in.

What do you guys think? Which one do you prefer?

I definitely prefer one dimension, even though on popular games it tends to be crowded. I play MMORPGs because I get to play with so many people, having them in different dimensions is the opposite of that.

MMORPG games get so confusing already with the vastness of maps and different worlds so it's better for everyone involved just to simplify the game. One dimension for me.

World of Warcraft and many MMORPGs utilize this concept for story lines and for dungeons etc...

There are multiple instanced and phased areas of games for the mechanics of quests, the completion of content in the right order, and for story line continuity.

I like having everyone in one place. I haven't experienced otherwise but from the way you described it it does sound kind of awful and weird. Maybe if I got to try it I may change my mind but as of now it doesn't sound good to me.

    Yeah, you hit the point.
We play MMORPG to meet other people. It is a part of the "world" to run into people unexpected or expected. In the case I mentioned earlier, it was more like playing a singleplay campaign or with a multiplay party locally at most. It takes away the feel of "one world".

I think the main reason behind why they produce a different dimension for each group is the limited areas they have in the game. They should have created more areas for the players, or limit the number of players for each server.

I prefer having only one 'dimension' unless there's a new expansion or big content patch causing zones and dungeons to get congested with too many people. Dimensions can be super annoying as well when you're trying to play with a friend and they get put into a different one from you and there's no way to switch to it.

Yeah I guess multi dimensions are a cop out for crowded areas or badly designed, but that shouldn't happen at all. You should design those rooms to be able to fit every player, that's why the game is from the MMORPG genre.

Dimensions isn't even the term for this in most games. In Wow example it is called phasing. I f you are in the same zone but it is different than what your friends can experience and you can't directly interact with them it is because you are in a phased zone and they are not on the same phase as you.

It doesn't matter what you call it. It can be called many different things in different games by different players. The point is, you know what I mean. :)

And yeah, that sucks you can't meet other players who are in the same area. It is quite the opposite of why the game is a MMORPG.

I wasn't hung up on names, just pointing it out and explaining. Phased questing zones are needed for continuity and usually done for portions of a game that are meant to be solo. After completing the phased portion people are usually able to group for other content in the zone.

One dimension is just easier to handle honestly. A lot of MMO's are so huge that it's hard to handle, so if they kept changing it would be even more confusing!

You say that, but MMORPGs do it all the time.
