Many of us assumed that Pavel
    died
in Depot, but in the E3 stage demo interview for Gamespot, Huw Beynon actually says that you help your companion Pavel put on his gasmask after the plane crash sequence.

Go to around 9:46 and watch from there.

Sorry if this is a duplicate.

... Obviously I'm dumb, and haven't been paying good enough attention... So disregard this thread.

No worries about duplication. And to answer your question, they are simply two different Pavels. While the first was a ranger and right-hand man of Ulman, Pavel in the 2012 gameplay video is a Hanza officer from the Redline who helps you cross the surface in order to reach Theatre Station. The original Pavel seemed like a nice, resourceful fellow who could get out of sticky situations, such as when you break free from the nazi roadblock. I hope this new Pavel is up to snuff!

Just for the sake of posting...

Pavel was one of my favorite characters, like Danylla, even when I hardly spent time with him. Like what pip said, he was resourceful, calm, nice, and might've been some sort of big brother to Artyom if he had lived longer. I can totally see me and him and Danylla hanging out in Sparta, if I were Artyom.

When I first heard about this new Pavel, I was all like, "What, he's alive?" You can guess my surprise when I was wrong. Lol. But this new Hansa-Pavel has perked up my interest. I hope he stays alive this time around. But then again, 4A games might try to make Pavel characters into something like Gears of Wars' Carmine.

  5. Oh, that must be the same guy, because there is one Pavel limit, right? *nudge nudge* /sarcasm

    ^

I think this Pavel seems like a bit of a bad ass although I'm willing to bet he dies like almost all of Artyoms companions.

Obviously, there can only be one Pavel... just like there's only one Ivan and Vlad. :p

In all seriousness - yep, it's definitely a different Pavel; but this one seems pretty cool as well. As for Danila, he is very loosely based off a character called Daniel (in the book). I was actually quite disappointed to see that his equivalent in the game is a much less developed character and plays such a major role. In the book, Daniel is one of the friendliest and most helpful characters to Artyom.

  8. The thing is, the game has a lot of namesakes all over.

Caravan master is Boris. So is one of the Rangers. There is Peter the medic and Peter the outpost guard. There is Sergei the Market guard and there is Sasha's uncle Sergei.

It's baffling to see people jumping to conclusions when they find out someone has the same name as that one character.

Yeah, especially since all of the names that usually are overused are quite popular in Eastern Slavic countries - so I guess it's actually quite realistic to have a few people with the same names.

I bet there is a good chance that he turns out to be a scumbag, but that's just speculation...

I'm almost 100% positive he is a Red Line officer.

I knew it was one or the other, so I'll take your word for it.

I liked Pavel. He went out like a bad ass fighting off like 4 mutants on him. I did hate that he died. He seemed like a great guy but then again this is the metro and good people always die in the metro.

Yeah, I haven't much knowledge of that area, so I had no idea that so many people would have the same name. Usually authors will not use the same name over and over because of this, and they will even rarely create characters that have the same first letter.

    "Hey, you know John?"

    "Yeah."

    "Well he died."

    "WHAT?!"

"Oh, not that John. Or that one. Or that one. Or that one. Yep, that one."

Obviously, but sometimes some realism is important to make the experience more believable & immersive. ;)
