Portal or no portal?

Do you want portals in MMORPG world?

  1. All areas can be reached on foot within minutes from the nearest portals.

  2. Only major cities/hubs have portals, and it still take a long time on foot to reach many areas.

In a MMORPG, do you like to have

    1. portals which can teleport you almost everywhere. All areas can be reached on foot from the nearest portal within minutes.

    2. There are portals, but only portable to major cities/hubs. Lots of areas further away from popular area will take a long time to reach on foot.

    3. No portal at all. All areas must be reached on foot.

    What would you prefer?
I actually prefer #3, it can lay a foundation for super long quests like traveling from one continent to another over the period of months in real time. :)

but under certain circumstances #2 can work too. For example, if the accessibility for players to the portals are not too easy. There must be some kind of special conditions/items or cost an arm or leg to use the portal each time. I would prefer a fairly realistic world where people have to go on foot to most places.

    What do you prefer?

2 is my favorite. I like to walk to some areas just not the major areas which are really far away. That's why I like maple story because it's easy to teleport to the big areas but you must traverse to get to quests and smaller areas.

I also prefer the second option. It's balanced and you can still go to the main cities to take care of your business. Walking everything on foot would be boring and going everywhere with portals too!

Portals in major hubs and cities would be my choice. If people wish to do everything the long way, then they can choose to do that. However, I don't like how others would want the developers trying to limit the choice to portal for others.

I forgot to ask, what about the ability to teleport back to the nearest city/portal with the help of a recall stone or scroll? I know this has become norm in many MMORPGs to save players' time. However, I believe if everyone has to walk, then it would seem to be the new "norm". Plus it will force the game developers to make the game more interesting, thus the trip on foot would not be a waste of time and instead it is fun... then it wouldn't be problem, would it?

Think about when you are set to travel the "world", you have to go through many"hardships" and unexpected events to get to each "next stop". If you can just teleport to the next stop or teleport across the world, it is not fun as far as the "adventure" goes.

There will have to have some portals if t's a MORPG. I am not going to walk on foot wasting my time to go from own part to another in the game. Nope, I will quit sooner rather than later.

Portals are fine, but I actually do prefer walking everywhere on foot or at least by horse or something. I'm not that bothered by it.

That depends on the size and scale of the game itself. For example a map the size of skyrim without portal like fast travels would get really boring quickly after having to ride around for what seems like hours to go from town to town city to city. So if its a big world the yes I feel portals are essential How ever is the map is small and dose not take long to traverse the map then I dont think portals are needed.

portals take away the adventure element in games. the most fun aspect of a game is traveling its world in order to find out all the mysteries that lie ahead!

You guys actually missed a point in my opinion.

You are still thinking "small". Yes, it would be boring if the world is "big" (actually small) enough for you to know every part of it and you still have to walk from place to place you already know.

If the world is huge... gigantic, with everything out there is unknown to you, I do not believe it will be boring to go on a true adventure on foot.

Like it would be boring for you to go from your home to work/school every day on foot, but it might not be boring at all if you are going into a new city/town and explore around.

I prefer #2 just because it's the fairest choice but to be honest I hate it when I have to walk. I understand that the developers want you to just go ahead and explore the world they've built for you but if I had to walk around every time and spend half the time walking than playing the game then it's at fun at all.

Yeah that's true but some people don't find it really fun to just walk around and explore. If the game is big and has tons of things to offer that the mere act of walking around gets you some sort of activity somehow then it's great but for most games it doesn't happen.

I am not saying walk around is the only activity between places.
If you have played Neverwinter Nights, there are always something going on when you are on the road. Be it a group of bandits, or some wild beasts coming out of nowhere. Of course things can be a lot more interesting if the game system can randomly spam well designed stories/quests at any place at any time.

Yea, I want portals. I'm very lazy when it comes to running around and I feel that sometimes it just is boring.

I like WoW's system where you have to originally go to the flight path to get it. Which I like 100% more then just being able to smart teleport to anywhere I feel like without exploration.

I don't mind an over abundence of portals or waystones. But on the other hand, one would never want a game to be too easy. So I'm a big fan of the unlocking of said portals or waystones. Be it fighting a boss type creature or finding the hidden "portal chamber", its cool to mix it up. But I definitly think you need to earn the ability to warp... after ALOT of running around, lol.

Yeah I get what you mean but most games, at least the ones that I've played have this kind of mechanic, kind of like in Skyrim where you get to talk to people and they have something for you to do or the random dragon attack and wildlife and bandits and all that stuff, but most of them are very calculated and for the most part you're walking around, you get what I mean? I'm not saying walking around and exploring is a bad thing, I'm just saying have the convenience of being able to fast travel wherever.

Basically you are confirming my theory.
WOW has a limited sized world. You can only go many places before every place/path is already known to you. You like the fact it makes you to go through every place at least once, because each place is new and fresh to you before that first run.
If the world is truly gigantic, you shouldn't feel like it is boring to run to new places. Because the world is limitless. You will always on some new path and see new things, encounter new NPCs and Players.

I have to admit that GW2 portal has spoiled me. I like exploring areas and the like, but I don't want to spend 2.5 hours passing through zones I don't care about to get to where I want to go. I want to be able to get to places in an instant without having to waste time sitting on my rear watching a gryphon fly forever. That time can actually be spent on playing the game rather than doing nothing.

I prefer option number #2. I think it is important to be able to access all the main hubs quickly. There are too many reasons I think that! :p

I prefer the second option. I don't like to have no portals in game especially the map is big.
