I have left and come back to World of Warcraft 3-4 times now, and each time I come back I remember thinking about how much the game has changed and improved. There's this initial "everything is terrible" feeling where you don't know what's going on and why things have been altered from what you remember, but after you get up to speed, it's a very interesting exercise in understanding why the game devs changed what they did.

Basically, has quitting a game for some time and coming back to it ever changed your perspective on a franchise? WoW is a strange case because it has a strong enough player base to 'age' with the market. As technology advances, Blizzard can afford to reach further with how they design their game because they have tons of money. Not all MMOs have this luxury.

Wow is very tempting to get back into because a lot of people's friends play the game and get them hooked back into it. The Wow devs know this so they add incentives for old players to easily level up so they can start the same old PVP/PVE grind again.

Once I quit a game, it's very rare for me to come back. If I'm heavily invested in one, then I rarely just walk away and when I do walk away, I do it with intentions of not coming back later.

Now there are plenty of games that I don't get into heavily, play for a little while, and then don't play again for several weeks, but it's not usually MMOs.

I stopped playing WoW 3 years ago but now I don't know why I started playing again and I also bought Mists of Pandaria.

Yes, it does to me but not for every game. Some games have left an everlasting bad impression on me. No matter how many times I get back to it, I still don't like it. Actually WoW is one of those games.

^This. That is more like a hiatus. When you quit a game, you never look back, even if you just need to log in just to say hi to your guildmates or online friends.

If you quit a game, it means it's over, you're never going back. As RMC and the person above me with a strange name mentioned, what you did was you took an indefinite break. People often do that for MMO games that they found interesting at some point, but got bored or other things came up. Unlike most single player games where there is an ending and little replay value, MMO games tend to allow you to do different things in different ways. With expansions and big patches, people are bound to go back to them at some point.

I agree, but only to a certain extent. I know people who will "quit" and you know they're going to end up coming back a few months later, so it's technically a break. Others, though, I know they quit with the intention of never coming back. They give away all their stuff, uninstall the game, etc, and it may be a long time later, but sometimes they'll go ahead and come back. They didn't intend it as a break or hiatus, though, and they did "officially quit" at that time.

It's kind of like someone who smokes. They can "quit" and still start back up years later. It doesn't mean they didn't quit the first time, though.

Yep absolutely, I used to play my Perfect world game and then quit and every time I come back to it I find a new group of spells or even new races etc, it's brilliant to do it, it does make a really good and exciting manner of playing a game.

I've done it with League of Legends. I basically got bored from it, so I decided to stop playing it, but a couple months later , maybe 2 or 3, I saw a video of how much the game had changed and decided to try it. So I got into it again. hahaha

Over the years I stopped and started playing WoW probably at least once each expansion lol, though I have to say I've been active throughout the whole Mists of Pandaria expansion and I'm waiting with anticipation Warlords of Draenor. If I don't like the expansion however I'll be "quiting" for real this time - won't be returning ever again :p

I think it is all too easy for you to say that especially considering that you have just admitted returning to the game every time a new expansion hits the market hehe.

Yeah, but till now there was no good alternative for me, while now there will be Wildstar, EQ 2, Blade & Soul, Return of the Condor Hero: Zero, Heroes of the Storm... This time around there are just too many good games I can fill the void WoW will leave for me :D

lol that's what they all say I think I have only once seen someone say they are going to quit a game and actually do so he actually gave all his stuff away in a raffle and deleted his character for good.

Yeah unfortunately WoW is just one of those games in which you do get quite hooked to it and every time a new expansion is released you somehow manage to get drawn right back into the game, I gave my character and everything to a mate of mine and told him to change all the details so I can never get access to it again.

Haha, I didn't mean to spark a discussion over the definition of "quitting." If you want to call it a hiatus or an extended break or an indefinite gap or whatever, fine, but I thought it all generally meant the same thing.

Anyway, yes, the expansions provide a lot of fresh blood circulating into the game, and it's very interesting to watch how for example Mists of Pandaria changed their design philosophy from one based around daily quests to one based around organic interaction like the Timeless Isle. Things like that catch my eye a lot, more so than the impossible to gauge "difficulty" of the game.

Yea, I'm absolutely guilty of quitting basically every expansion and coming back during every expansion. WoD WILL be my last expansion though (at least that's what I continue to tell myself...)

I don't really quit I just take long breaks and come back to some games. Especially MMO's.
