I am just throwing this random thought out there, but what if interacting with an NPC in a town linked you to a real store?
    Imagine this:
I walk into a major hub in some town in some game. I need to buy some food for my character . I see a Dominoes or whoever wants the product placement. While I am buying my rations, I am able also to link to the real Dominoes pizza place and order home delivery while in-game. In return for the real world order, I get premium rations in the game as a perk for ordering through the game.
As long as it is no more intrusive than the banner ads we all ignore, it might work.

Hmm... interesting thought. Yes it could actually work really well for everyone, the premium rations in game is a must though since when I started reading this I was thinking: and why wouldn't I just order the pizza from the website? But I see you already thought of that.

So yeah, a pretty solid idea.

I like the idea, but one thing that may be hard to observe is quality of the item being bought. Electronics, books and hard copy video games may be fine, but food and drink is something else. However, I still like this idea and I think with the proper mechanics in place, it can work.

I like the idea as well, but I don't see it happening since we have prepaid gaming cards.

Thanks for the replies. I was actually expecting a more negative response.

The idea would only work if it could be a win-win-win situation.
The gamer gets an in-game perk for using that portal to shop.
The game creators/hosts get a little capital from advertising revenue (which hopefully would mean more to send on improving the game).
The advertiser gets business that it might not have gained otherwise.

I picked my example as the chain is large enough to provide service to a large number of players but it is possible to have the advertiser show up for a pre-selected zone as well. Targeted marketing based on an IP address isn't exactly unknown territory.

Sounds like something that might just be implented in future games. Imagine ordering a pizza in game, sweet!

That is actually a really good idea, I like the sound of it, maybe add the option of getting discounts on the real world objects by introducing a level aspect to it.

Ha! Great idea, I like it. Who knows, maybe we will see this in games in the future. You should patent the idea in case someone will use it someday, you could make some serious cash. :D

Sounds interesting, but I don't see it happening/wouldn't care much for it personally.

It is a good idea, and as you say it probably wouldn't catch on, due to the market for it most likely wouldn't be worth the amount they would have to spend to set it up.
