Is anyone else here fond of games created on the RPG Maker programs? Some examples (and some of the best games created in RPG Maker in my opinion) include Witch's House, To The Moon, Ib, Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea, Corpse Party... just to name a few. I'm personally a huge fan of a lot of these games. The first I played was Ib, which I thought was incredible. I've been playing games made on this engine ever since then. Currently I am into Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea (despite many people saying to avoid this game for various reasons), and I really like it. Some people have been able to create truly amazing games using the program, lots of which just blow my mind with how well done they are. So, do you guys like these games? And if you do - do you have any good recommendations for other people (like me) that enjoy them?
I feel as long as the individuals that make the game in question set themselves apart from the standard RPG Maker system and go off with their own unique spin on things, some amazing games come out of it. Unfortunately there is still a lot of games that spin out the same old and boring content without any kind of unique system, any kind of unique game-play, and just a generic and boring story-line. Some I thought were pretty neat though that are sort of worth mentioning are Leo & Leah, Starless Umbra, Ninja Clause, and Touhou - Wondering Souls. They all offer at least something unique to the RPG Maker series of games, which is probably why I like them so much
I like RPG Maker games so long as they are not lazily made, I've played Wadanohara and while the the game is good...it goes into a turn for WTF that I won't spoil for you. As for recommendations...The only games I played kinda disturbed me because it's presented in one way, but then the more you go into it, it's just...WTF. For those that don't know, the two games I described is Mogeko Castle (made by the same person that did Wadanohara) and Dreaming Mary. Just thinking about the second one....ugh is all I can say about it.
No, I've never been facing a game developed with this kind of techonology but as a developer this is really amateur graphic engine and would never be able to keep the things up with tons of other players connected.
I am indifferent to what developers use to create their games, so long as the games are fun. For example, I never liked any of the PC version of the JRPG's that people keep making with RPG Maker, but I liked Always Sometimes Monster and Lisa which is really strangely quirky. So you associate the style of the graphic to that of being amateur graphics? o___o To The Moon was made by RPG Maker and is rated by various review sites like IGN, Gamespot, Metacritic, etc at 8/10 and above, some of which rated it 9/10. On Steam, there are over 16,000 positive reviews and under 500 negative ones.
Yeah, that's a rather odd comment. Although the niche' games aren't as mainstream as other games, they're still quite popular in their own right, and as the developer in particular may have been on a tight budget, I think To The Moon looks like quite an amazing game and I can't wait to get a chance to play it!
I love RPG Maker, and the games that people create with it. I've used the program for many years myself, and I've probably played hundreds of games with the program. However, the issue is when people starting trying to sell games that they've created with it. Something like To the Moon or Lisa are amazing games, and well worth the price. On the other hand, places like steam have their fair share of RPG Maker games that just seem low effort compared to the games I mentioned before, and even some free games people have made, so it gives the program and unfair reputation amongst the gaming community.
Did I talk about the style of graphics? I was pointing out that this engine was done by amateurs thus its quality it's likely to be worst than a professional one like everything in life.
I've seen quite a few good RPG Maker games! To The Moon is probably one of the most known ones currently. It's a very emotional game and has a touching story.
Out of curiosity, have you ever actually played any of the games made in this engine or are you judging them entirely based on your first-glance opinion? Games like "To The Moon" have been created in this engine and have gotten incredible reviews as well as have incredible story lines & gameplay factors. Judging an entire set of hundred of games based only on the fact that they were made in an engine you consider to be for "amateurs" is kind of a ridiculous factor to go on. They are not all made with premade graphics; many people do their own artwork along with it, including creating their own spriting for the scenery, characters, etc. There's a lot more work put into it in a lot of cases than what you seem to be assuming.
I think they are quite fun, if have nothing else to play and need to scratch that RPG itch. Nothing wrong with amateurs creating games in a free to use game engine, as long you have fun playing the finished product.
Did I say the stuff created with this engine is shitty? I don't think so. I just pointed out that professional engines such as CryEngine, UnrealEngine, etc.. are better as they have made by professionals, I didn't say that a game must be a total disaster just becauseit was made with this engine. I only made a comparison.
Nah, I didn't assume that's what you were saying, I was only curious as to if you're basing this on actually having played any of them or not or if you're going solely on the fact that it is an amateur engine. c: If you haven't checked any of them out yourself, I'd really recommend giving them a shot, though! You might actually be surprised by how well made some of them are. Its been mentioned a couple of times already, but "To The Moon" is the most impressive one I've played by far. My favorite area of the game is the lighthouse scene which looks to have had the most work put into it.
The fact that a game, made by that enigne, fits your taste is just personal as the quality of the engine is measured with more objective terms and not if the games made with it are funny or whatever.
There are tons of great RPG Maker games, but few of them seem polished and perfect. Even the best of them contain some annoying elements or plot holes.
I really enjoyed Ib, and was in the midst of trying to be Ao Oni (never did beat it) before having to surrender that computer. I remember those games of RPG Maker being quite brilliant for what they were, but haven't brought myself to play the Witch's House yet. I watched the first part on Youtube as well as a friend playing it and couldn't bring myself to become that interested in it. However, I expect like the first two games, it needs to be experienced first-hand to enjoy it and not vicariously through another player. With that exception, I've enjoyed most RPG Maker games.
I really liked IB. What a girl! I have never made my own rpg before and I would like to see more indie rpg games to see how creative people can be.
RPG maker is an engine and is not really responsible for the quality of the games created with it. The creator itself has to have the skill to make a good game. RPG maker also spawned the amazing Corpse Party franchise which I really like.
I thought about buying RPG Maker after that recent Game Developer Bundle from Humble Bundle, but I decided against it. As long as a game is good, I don't really care whichever engine it came from. I picked up a really cool RPG called One Way Heroics a few weeks ago, and it was noticeably 'RPG Maker-y'. I don't mind. Using something like that doesn't guarantee quality, but it doesn't guarantee failure, either.
There are two types of games made with RPG maker 1. Excellent games where the developers use the engine to do the easy stuff, but build a huge unique game on top of it 2. Games where the engine is the game and the developers add very little that isn“t part of the original engine
