    With the new technology and massive processing power developers have at their fingertips these days, a lot of new games shown off at E3 this year were very complex. With all the second screen integration, persistent online worlds, there was one new game unveiled at E3 that was starkly unique in its simplicity.
    Ryse: Son of Rome is a very simple game. Talking to some friends at E3, this seemed to turn some them off it. But I loved it. The game is focused extremely tightly on basic swordplay and cool-looking kill animations. There are a few other elements around commanding your squad and so on, but what it's really about is great-looking kills and not much more.
    Playing the game put me in the shoes (well, sandals) of Roman general Marius Titus. The demo I played, which is also played through in the YouTube video embedded below, starts as Titus and his men land on a beach beneath England's White Cliffs of Dover.

    I wonder if the excitement I have for Ryse: Son of Rome, is somewhat because it feels familiar, maybe a throwback if you will. I think this is going to be a great game and I can't wait.
