Anyone here train in self defense, outside of the computer ;)?

MMA counts too! I really enjoy Korean martial arts.

Ya, I do but just because I don't like weights. It's a good way to stay in shape.

I don't do it to beat people up though. Honestly I think martial arts can give you a false sense of confidence. Guys that learn how to fight on the street are sneakier and used to using cheap ways of winning a fight.

Martial arts teaches you the respectful way to fight but if you get in a fight with someone who doesn't follow the rules that martial arts teaches then you might not be prepared and can get hurt.

I saw a guy get beat up by a dude who grabbed his nuts and wouldn't let go. It was pretty brutal. Some people will do whatever it takes.

Yep I train in Tae Kwon Do, Aikido and Shotokan Karate. I even did a bit of Kickboxing there for a little while.

I love how it keeps me in shape and healthy, also the fact it instils a sense of discipline in people.

Although I don't agree with the fact that just because you are taught a martial arts form that you can't defend yourself against someone one the street who would fight in a sneaky way.

For instance the "Sticky Hands" technique, is all about reading the movements of your opponent and then using his own energy and force to defeat himself, meaning, he beats himself up and you needn't throw a single punch.

I used to prctice Kung Fu under a Vietnamese instructor until I went into chi or breathing stances/exercises. It's not all about self defense as the methods/discipline we apply in doing karate or kung fu. We rarely get engaged in a real fight but the discipline and techniques we gain especially during practice we are able to use in ordinary days at work and at home.

Yes I do receive a martial arts training when I was in middle school. My mom enrolled me because some girls are keep on picking on me at school.

I would love to learn a few martial arts myself. If only I have the time to take classes on weekends for like 3 hours or something, I will.

I wanted to learn the martial art. And it was good enough fun for me. But so far from what I have seen it was not that good for the playing. I think for each one of us it can be different in that context.

In this day and age, I think it would be best for many to learn self defense.

I have never tried to train in one but I would like to do that but it's not a must. I prefer I join the gym first before I do any of that training.
