For maintenance reasons it would be a nightmare, but from a player perspective it might be a boon. Would you prefer to be able to play on a server near you?
Being closer, data packets would actually get there (hopefully) a little faster. More important than that, however is that a closer server would attract more people in your own timezone. Getting together to do a raid would be easier to coordinate and could run in an evening without someone starting dinner and someone staying up until three am.
Having servers decentralized would also allow for many to be operational if some are down due to power outages etc.

Well... I like to see servers split between EU and the USA. If the game has a lot of players from Asia then they should probably have their own servers too. I don't see a need for any further splits, but continental ones are ok depending on the type of game.

I don't see ping as a big issue in MMORPGs, but time zones can make it hard for a guild to get together.

I don't have an issue with ping and stuff. I play the EU servers for WoT and have no lag issues and I live in western Canada. However, I think it's still a good idea to have regional servers, for those that do have lag issues. At least two major regional servers for each commercial game. WoW has it all over the globe, but they're big and wealthy. Smaller companies can make do with 2-3 servers world wide. Say one in the US Central, one in the EU and one in Japan.

Region locking is evil and in most cases shows a publisher is just being lazy.

I don't mind a game having regions. But locking customer in to one region via clients/product key or ip blocking is just plain rude. They hide behind the excuse of "providing the best experience for our customers". But what they really mean is we don't want to pay some fees or deal with the legal issues our game may have so we're taking the easy way out.

I really prefer the games that do have regions, but let you pick which one you want to connect to and let you change such as Rift.

Agreed. Region locks are just plain lazy and show that the publisher could really give a crap less about the player. I really recommend leaving games that have these, because their playerbase will not last long at all..

MMORPGS are hardly dependent on ping. The timezone thing is something i have never thought about, but if we split up the players even more, it wont remain an MMO.
