I find the songs interesting, though I see where you're coming from, though. I might think of it differently if I was listening instead of reading, you know, and wanted to get on with the story. I've never been really bothered by it, though.

The songs and poems are not my favorite part of the book, though they have grown on me considerably since I first read the books at about the same age as you. However, something you said jumped out at me: you note that you would enjoy the songs and poems if they "were written as tales one character is telling another". However, you proceed to single out Bilbo's poem in the chapter "Many Meetings" as an example of one you dislike. Now, I agree that the poem is extremely long and I sometimes skim through it, but it seems to me that this is a prime example of poetry as a form of character-to-character storytelling within the context of the overall story. I'm afraid I don't entirely understand why this song would be one you single out when it seems to fit the criteria for what you think would be more acceptable. Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you how to feel or that you're wrong, but I was a bit puzzled by this. If you could elaborate or explain (it is, after all, fully possible that I've simply misread you) then I would be grateful. Again, welcome to the Plaza and especially the Lore forums; I hope you enjoy your time here and stick around! It's always nice to see long and thought-provoking posts that offer a new and different perspective
