The Civilization games are probably the best games to use a Steam Controller with. You have as much time as you need to finish your turn, so even if you're not completely comfortable with the controller right away, you'll have plenty of time to figure out how to use it. It may be a little frustrating at the beginning, but I guarantee you'll get the hang of it within an hour or two.

With that said, nothing beats playing a good old game of Civ with a mouse, in my opinion. However, if you are so inclined, you can definitely use a controller to build up your civilization to victory! Many of my friends do it, and I've seen dozens of videos of people playing with one. The controller is a really great tool released by Valve and I definitely think that Civ is one of the best games to use it with.

Let me know how it goes! Hopefully you'll get used to it quickly!

The Steam Controller works surprisingly well with the Civilization games. I mean, obviously, in the end, the mouse and keyboard is going to be the fastest, most efficient way to play a game of Civ, but the Steam Controller is no slouch either, if you want to play the game with a controller, there's no better controller to use.

Well, if I were you I would definitely not use the Steam Controller since I am more of a mouse + keyboard fan, I have never felt any comfortable when using controllers, even when playing consoles, I just do not like them whatsoever, it might be the best controller for Civ games but I would never leave the mouse and the keyboard for one of those, I am a traditional gamer, at least that is what I think I am.

Games like Civ are just significantly better on mouse and keyboard. Action games I can see the Steam controller being useful, but a strategy game like Civilization practically needs to be played with mouse on keyboard. There's a reason strategy games are historically better on PC than consoles, after all!

I've never heard of a Steam controller before, is it any different than an XBONE/PS4 one? I'm used to playing Civ exclusively with my mouse and keyboard, it would feel weird to use a controller, haha. :p

It's a controller made exclusively for Steam games. The general layout is very similar to Xbone/Ps4, they both have a D-pad, 4 buttons, and joysticks. The Steam controller is a little bit different though, one of the two joysticks is more of a large pad, rather than a joystick. The overall feel is mostly the same though, and it was made to give PC gamers and opportunity to experience games at their maximum potential on the console they weren't made exclusively for.

For example, Dark Souls is one of the biggest games people use Steam controllers with. The game runs really poorly when playing with a keyboard and mouse, which is why the community made mods to make it a little bit more accessible with KB+M. As a matter of fact, if you check the Steam page for Dark Souls 1, I'm pretty sure you'll find something that says that the game plays MUCH better with a controller than with a keyboard and mouse.

This is where the Steam controller comes into play. It makes games like that a lot easier for PC players to get into, without having to worry about the hassle of figuring out how to optimize something that wasn't made very well in the first place.

Furthermore, the controller really shines in games like Civ, where you can take your time to decide what to do. It's not as effective in games where you have to react as quickly as possible, such as Call of Duty. However, of the top of my head, I know for sure that Civ and the X-Com series play very well with the controller. The ability to take as much time as you want lets you maneuver the controller to fit exactly what you want to do. I really like the controller because I can just lay back and play the game, instead of having to sit upright to play games.

It works very well with the game and it's great to use if you want to sit back on your couch without having to mess around with a mouse and keyboard. If you are hesitant about stealing away the steam controller you could also just buy a cheap keyboard and touchpad combo though if it were me and I know I'd be spending money on that I would just buy another controller probably.

Wow, that's a good question. I use the controller for some games but I honestly haven't tried using it with Civ V yet. It just hadn't occurred to me because of the option for keyboard shortcuts. However, it's something I will definitely give a try to now and get back to you on that. It seems like it would be fine, because of the fact that you have a lot of time to finish your turn. So if you weren't entirely sure how it functions or if it took you a little bit of extra time to navigate the screen with the controller, then that should be fine. I definitely enjoyed reading other people's experiences though.

That's pretty interesting, so pretty much the Steam Controller is compatible with all games currently on Steam now? I have an XBOX 360 controller for PC and I think it's pretty good for all the games I play, would it be a good investment to buy a Steam one?

Sadly, I don't think the controller works with every game on Steam. I'm pretty sure if you go to a game's Steam page, you'll see whether or not it has controller support. It might say if it works specifically with the Steam controller as well, but don't quote me on that. Although any game that says it's compatible with a controller should work with the Steam controller.

To answer your second question, I don't think the investment is worth it if you already have a solid controller. I think the Xbox 360 and the Steam Controller are both pretty much perfectly matched in quality, but I might be a little biased because I used to be an Xbox gamer. If you didn't already have a controller, I'd definitely recommend a Steam Controller, but unless your controller is falling apart or you have extra cash to spend on testing out the controller, I don't think it's a necessity. Like I said, the Xbox controllers are of really great quality and have been a solid component of PC gaming for a long time.

Yeah, when I bought the 360 one I was wondering if I made a mistake because the One controller was just $10 more, but it's really solid and Microsoft have done a great job to assure compatibility with most PC games.

I would highly suggest investing in a Steam controller for playing Civilization. You can relax alot easier and better maintain your troops. Unfortunately alot of games on Steam dont work all that great though so if your not all that into Civ anymore maybe don't invest in it.

Does it work well with Civilizations I was always led to believe that it was better playing it with a keyboard and a mouse and that a steam controller would be better for car games.

It works pretty well with Civ games. The biggest flaw of the Steam controller is that it's hard to use well in situations that need you to be as reactive as possible, such as shooting or fighting games. For most other situations though, it's a good way to be able to just lay back and chill while playing a game. Nothing beats coming home after a long day at work and playing Civ for a few hours just laid back in my chair. My job involves a lot of standing upright, so the Steam controller lets me sit back in my seat and enjoy what the game has to offer. I'd highly recommend it for Civ since you literally have all the time in the world to choose your turn, and because Civ doesn't require you to be on your toes the whole time.

Do you know if software like Better DS3 works differently than the Steam controller on games like Civ V?

I haven't had any problems playing shooters on steam with the controller. I use it to play a couple of zombie games that are run and guns. It takes some set up but once you're there, it's nice. I connect two of them and play with one of the kids sometimes when they're here. Sit back and game with them. I'm wondering if Civ 5 can handle the same thing.

Can't say I've ever used Better DS3. I've had no trouble using my Steam controller with most games that have native controller support, though. As a matter of fact, I find that it works better with Civ than with most games. Valve actually released their first demo of the controller with gameplay of Civ, so it should work especially well with the newer games of the series. There shouldn't be any problems for you regarding Civ while using the controller, as far as I know. All of my friends that have tried playing Civ with it have no complaints at all, and I haven't really heard of anyone else experiencing issues with the game hooked up to the controller.

Sweet, thanks for responding. I was just curious. I use Better DS3 to use controller on non steam games. I've not really had any issues doing that, but I also have not tried it with Civ V, I was just curious if anyone had and if there was any performance difference.

I would never have thought that it would be as good to use as you say. I always associate a steam control to more faster paced games. Thanks for the share.

To each their own, really. I've tried it with FPS games and I didn't like it at all. I think it's much better suited for slow paced games, but that might just be because I've rarely used a controller for fast paced games in the 4 years I've been a primarily PC player. Some of my friends like playing FPS games with the Steam controller, but I just can't get into it. I honestly don't see the point of using a controller with PC FPS games, since the advantage using a mouse and keyboard in those games is massive. You really can't compare aiming with a controller to aiming with a mouse, since there's little to no delay with a mouse, but there is a much more noticeable delay on controllers. I prefer using controllers for games that either really need one to be played well, such as Dark Souls, or slow paced games, like Civ.
