There are just too many variants, there were like 16 different models announced during the CES. How is Steam going to attract the average console gamers that have no idea about PC specs? They have machines ranging from $499 to $1600, what the heck!

Those are mostly just the third party ones although. The Official Steambox has yet to be announced. They will most likely have a tier scheme for those unversed in Specs.

I agree it is confusing I assumed it's a PC built like a console, but chances are those steam machines that are around $500 are from companies like ibuypower which are knowed for using cheap parts and having PSU failure.

Those are third party variants. The official Steam box has yet to be announced and will be what the games recommended specs are designed around. For now, all these other makers are just making their own models that come with the SteamOS and the controller. It is these things that will attract console gamers, and the machine itself is designed to be open, flexible and upgrade-able. Valve isn't trying to make a console, they're trying to make a couch friendly gaming PC for the TV.

Right now if you wanted to buy an Xbox One with better specs for a bit more money, you can't because there's only one kind and there will only ever be one kind. This kind of closed, proprietary nature of consoles is slowly choking away their lifespan and Valve is trying to push away from that and make them more like user-friendly PCs.

I just think that there should be one standardised version of the Steam machine. Right now, most gamers that are not tech savvy will not know which one to get. They might get deterred because they don't know where to start with so many choices.

Personally I don't think I would spend $1600 on a steam pc if I had that kind of money I would just build me a high end gaming pc and I don't think a console gamer would spend that kind of money but I could be wrong.

Jesus 1600$ is super overkill at that. Like with 900 bucks I could make a significantly awesome PC.. Heck with even 500 I could do quite a bit given I had already used some of my already acquired parts.

Yeah just wait for the official steambox with a standard price. All those others are just trying to just on the Steam OS and make a quick buck.

True I an expecting the official manufacture prices to be a little more, but might not reach prices of $1600 I would think.

I'm thinking the official boxes will probably be around 500-1000 range or so. These unofficial ones are just boxes with Steam OS and a Steam Controller included. You are better off waiting on valve they definitely know what they are doing.

They are basically custom built PCs that act and perform like a console. Steam is letting other manufacturers get involved, which I think is absolutely amazing and has never been done before.

Just reading posts made this confusing, so I can only imagine how confused you are when it comes to the actual steam-machines. I am awaiting their announcement for steam box. I have been excited about it for some time now. =D
