Surprisingly great games

Normally, I don't play games to do with sports, simulation about wood cutting, hunting games and raising pets. However, there must have been times that a game I normally would not play surprised me just how fun it was.

For as long as you remember, which games have you played that unexpectedly gave you a lot of enjoyment?

Believe it or not, the last one that I remember was Demons Souls. Before I played it, I've heard about its insane difficulty and many deaths. I was put off at first until I was looking for games to play and picked it up. I love it and never looked back, I even recommended the game to people then.

The Witcher series was a very pleasant surprise for me. I went in with absolutely no expectations and really enjoyed my playthrough.

I never thought I would enjoy any browser-based strategy games. My friends used to play Tribal Wars and I really don't understand the fun in playing games that are primarily text-based....then along came Mafia Wars and I suddenly began to appreciate the beauty of such games. Sometimes the simplicity of those kind of games can be deceiving as those games tend to be the ones that are addicting to play. (>_<)

Although I`m very ashamed to admit it, for me it was FarmVille 2. I do consider myself a serious gamer :D and I know most of us would not even touch Facebook games, but due to constant bugging from my significant other to play the game to help her out I started playing it and had unexpected amounts of fun with it. Really weird stuff. :p

I went into Dark Souls knowing I would like it (I had wanted to play Demon's Souls since it was announced but it was PS3 only and I had no PS3 back then) but I didn't foresee my obsession with the entire series...

When I first played Civilization, I felt very lost, thinking they are too hard for me. But as I got older, I started to appreciate how detailed, how complex they are and how much the developers must have researched to come up with a historically accurate game. (Well, not 100% accurate but ......)

Then I started trying others simulation games like SimCity and The Sims. The Sims are awesome :3

MonsterSeed for the PS1. I got this game as a freebie when I purchased my PS1. I read the reviews and saw that it received an average rating of 5/10 so I didn't play it outright. After a couple of months of not having a new game, I had no other choice but to play it. I didn't expect much from it. But when the battles came, I was hooked. I loved the monster collecting/summoning system of the game. It was the closest thing to Pokemon, only a lot better.

The most surprising for me was "Mafia II." I was incredibly surprised when ending the game in tears. That game moved me emotionally and I was not expecting it at all. The storyline was there and I was hooked from the very beginning to the end.

The Stanley Parable on Steam is pretty cool, the game is new and refreshing... well, if that is how I should describe it. Try it out, its on sale right now on Steam if I was not mistaken.

Its scary when you get lured into the trap of games like Farmville and Papa Pear Saga. I don't like to even admit that I play them although I do draw the line at Candy Crush!

Civilization was really hard in the beginning but after much grumbling and fighting it one day I finally go what the heck was going on. I don't play it as much as I used to but occasionally I do enjoy a game of it.

Velvet Assassin, the reviews really don't do that game ANY justice. It plays ALOT better then one would except for a game rated that low. I love that game and have gifted it to many different friends during this last steam sale.

Oh! That one is definitely underrated. It's pretty solid and the story isn't bad, the ratings are extremely harsh. You would think the game is absolutely terrible, but it's solid. I never beat it, though, my 360 copy broke and I haven't downloaded it on Steam yet...

I feel you, I was addicted to it, but now I play FarmVille: Country Escape on my phone, it's all the joy of FV, minus the wilting crops and limited turns. Plus you can play fully offline.

Skyrim I think. I know it's a good game long before but I'm not really into those kinds of games really because I'm really a bit casual when it comes to my games and I really don't like RPG's but once I get how things work and I started to get the hang out of it I really enjoyed and I'm surprised how addicted I am to the game.

The Hobbit (no, not the lego version). The one on Xbox made a hundred years ago - or it might as well have been considering very few people know about it now. Actually, it was made in 2003. It's received mix reviews, which always surprised me, considering I loved it to death. Then again, I was less than 10 years old when I first played it. It reminds me of Zelda a bit; the game was challenging, full of puzzles, and paid homage to the LOTR franchise.

One of the last truly enjoyable games I had played was Just Cause 2. All the things one can do in that game is pretty ridiculous but very entertaining.

I'd have to say Demon Souls and then Dark Souls. Those are some fantastic games that truly are challenging although manageable.

I went into counter strike:global offensive not expecting much, but it definitely exceeded my expectations. The game play is fresh and is was really fun for a beginner to the series. Shooters are not usually my thing, but this game really stood out. The level of difficulty is high, but still enjoyable.
