I heard that it's possible to hook up a microphone to the game and speak with other players that way. In the future I plan on doing this if it's true since I'll need my hands for using the keyboard to battle. However, that's just my stance on the matter. For those of you whom are definitely much more seasoned than I am, what do you prefer? Do you prefer to chat with the box provided by typing or do you prefer to use your microphone? If so or if not, then why?

I prefer talking rather than typing. What typing does is it distracts you from game. It's a it more tedious to be honest.

A microphone will only be of use when you will raid, at top levels, and then you will pretty much be forced to use a mic using Ventrilo to speak to your raid mates.

Yes you can talk to people in the game if you are in the same party or raid as they are (it doesn't work for the general/in-realm chat). WoW has a built-in capability for it, but most people don't seem to like it very much. Most guilds will use Ventrillo or Mumble instead. Personally I prefer typing and using voice chat always makes me very nervous. It's sort of one of my phobias and makes me very anxious (which makes me very unusual for a female, as I hate talking on the phone!).

I mix it up and use both voice chat and typing in-game, depending upon what I'm actually doing in WoW. If it requires extra attention, then you won't find me typing to contact other players.

Whenever I am not doing anything important, I type. When in an intense battle or something like that, that needs my attention, I will always make sure that I am not stopping to type, even if you are a quick typer, it still takes much longer to type than to talk something. The only time that typing will be faster is if you are some kind of world record typer, typing at 130-150 wpm+

I never tried a headset on World of Warcraft, but I did use one on Warrock. I had played the game for a few years before I was urged to download the program and get plugged in with the rest of my clan. I hated it immediately! I was so used to typing and only hearing the game sounds that the voices were extremely distracting. I recommend that if you do decide to go with voices that you do it before you get too deep into the game.

Talking with a VoIP is my preferred message because it allows my hands to do other things while playing. I can also call the shots in raids etc. VoIP is great because you can really talk to people and get to know them more.

I don't actually play the game yet, but as a general gamer, definitely talking. Of course, there are times when I have to type and I am fine with that. But if there is a way I can be hands free with my communication, I will be using that.

Generally you can get by with typing for general chat or for lower level/easy dungeons and looking for raid groups. The only time you will want to use a headset is if you're doing arenas with partners for competitive PvP or if you're raiding with a guild. Usually using programs like Mumble helps coordinate strategy with a group of people without interfering with important game mechanics and gameplay. Even if you don't like talking and are shy, the bare minimum is that you have to be in there to listen to directions. Personally I prefer typing since I'm rather shy, but I will listen in on Mumble for raids, ect.

I generally prefer talking because typing takes you away from the action and leaves you open. Sometimes you might be trying to warn another player in your group about something and you just can't do it fast or eloquently enough through the chat, that's when talking is better. If you plan on raiding you better believe you will need a headset.

Talking over typing always because talking lets you be more engaged in the game then typing. Also, typing can be a bit distracting when your fighting other players with friends so talking lets you be more focused and succeed in your battle.

It's definitely better to talk while doing large raids or more organized events. It is much easier to talk and use all of your hotkeys/etc. than it is to stop what you are doing, type, and then continue on, especially with longer or more complicated messages. However if you are just playing with a small group I enjoy to just type and occasionally listen to music.

I rather talk, that way I can focus on the game. Typing is good to use if that's all you have but I would rather talk personally.

WOW has an ingame voice system that NOBODY uses. It is strange because DDO has the same type of voice system and people use it all the time. WIth WOW, if you start raiding, almost always you will need to join a guild and they will have a vent server set up to talk, they don“t use the ingame voice chat.

Reason why people don't use the built in game voice system is because it's not as flexible as Vent/Mumble. Also from what I've heard it's not that great either. Sure it'll do, but it's not optimal. It's a nice feature, but WoW didn't toss their entire development team at it. Vent/Mumble on the other hand was created with VOIP chat in mind so they have developers dedicated to this kind of programming 24/7. Just because a device has the potential to be multi-functional, doesn't make it optimal.

I much prefer talking than typing. Typing is just an extra unneeded task that interrupts your game play or even worse keeps you from saying something important the minute it needs said. It makes a world of difference to just be able to speak what you need to say.
