What if the American government also built their subways (metros) with a nuclear apocalypse in mind?

I just had this idea, since it was a nuclear war, it couldn't be just Russia, the most likely enemy would be America.
I think it would be cool to play in the American subways.
    Were they better prepared?
    Did they build better structures?
Maybe they still have a small population and all the old leaders still run their government?

What do you think? was Russia the only country who built a safeguard against nuclear war?

Wasn't Russia's Metro system just for train-transport and not protection against nuclear warfare?
Either way, I don't think America would have a great chance of surviving. At least not at the same rate as Russia. America's metro system is far from as good as Russia's. Even if America did make it, I doubt their old leaders would still be leaders, if they even were still alive. There would be too much corruption between the survivors, just like in Metro2033, and most apocalyptic games and movies :p

After so much war and bloodshed, as well as the destruction of nearly the entire planet, would Russia still find Americans hostile? How would they combat them? Why would they? There would be absolutely no communications with America, let alone the outside world besides Sparta base, as well as no way to get across the world under such conditions. I feel that the people that had survived in the Moscow metro surely would not come together and unify in order to fight the American survivors. They pose no threats to one another anymore.

Also, Russia's metro system does double as a nuclear shelter if I'm not mistaken. America's does not.

Well its interesting but americas subways are meant and built for transport only. They dont have the airblocks and arent very deep compared to russias subway. (And i know. trust me the st petersburg metro is really deep. u stand on the escalator for like 30 minutes to get down to the station. lol)

    But...There is fallout.

  5. Soviet subway was never designed to be lived in for a prolonged amount of time. According to civil defence rules everyone will be evacuated out of the city in three days after a nuclear attack.

As far as I know, US of A depends more on prevention and shelter construction is to be carried "on the spot".

Expedient Shelter Construction and Occupancy Experiments, Cresson H. Kearny, Oak Ridge. National Laboratory Report No. 5039, March 1976.

I didnt mean like, they would go to war. I just thought if they re-established contact it would be interesting to see what they would do.

Maybe they find a ship that can still work or something.

It would be a fun concept to explore

Its an interesting idea, but there are so many american based games out there, i just dont think it would be as bleak as metro, it would end up with a real patriotic happy ending..

As for other metro systems around the world....

One of the stations on the U-bahn in Berlin was intended for use as a fallout shelter... Massive doors to swing shut across the tracks, trains doubling as sleeping quarters. There are generators down there, air filtration systems, communication systems, decontamination showers. Theres a canteen full of cutlery, piles of body bags, air-lock doors with view holes in for guards to check who is coming in.. It was built in the 70s/80s when Germany was still divided into east and west, and the East German government was under Soviet rule. Its a great place to visit if you get chance..

Imagine the germans' surprise when russian nazis come to take their stations. :p

I think metro could eventually reference or even include some missions in a foreign metro

Yeah thats a great scenario! in the meantime however there is the massive nuclear wasteland on the surface to cross. How would they travel that far? We know that filters dont last that long. It would be a huge journey, and we dont know whats out there. If you listen to the two rangers talking at Sparta base one of them tells of the russian nuclear subs out in the oceans which were still broadcasting radio messages, and how they could survive on board for half a year, but that these signals eventually fell silent too...
That said, being Russia, the russian military throughout the 80s was well prepared to fight a nuclear war. There would be masses of military bases out there, possibly with shelters. And a lot of soviet military vehicles were sealed to withstand fallout in order to continue to fight after a nuclear war.

(Personally i believe there are still functioning soviet military helicopters out there, which is how Artyom gets down from the Ostakino tower...:D)

Maybe there is a railroad and Artyom and the Rangers found a sealed military train which they use to cross the surface. I dont think a demon or anything else can stop a giant 10000kg+ block of metal moving towards them at 100mph+

What about some type of aircraft or rotor craft locked up in D6 it would make sense to have one plus I am kinda surprised that there has been no attempt to find or build such a craft I mean it only takes a decent engine with a good weight to power ratio, some sheet metal from maybe some rail cars to make wings and such I mean they still have engineers and facilities to build even a crude aircraft and people have done such things now. I think that would be very interesting :D

Yes, microlights would be fairly easy to build.. but the weather conditions on the surface are still pretty fierce, and microlight + pilot vs demons?? That would be a hell of a fight!
As for the train idea, it relies on the tracks being intact.. and you have seen the devastation on the surface..!

Yeah thats what I thinking about the train Idea But you could also fly above the weather and demons probably can't go 100+ MPH or 160+ KPH which is what a Cessna can do at 75% power. They could probably build a light aircraft like a cessna. If they build or find a aircraft like a cessna It could hold a Metro mini-gun with 500 or maybe 1000 rounds of spare ammo so any demons that did get near it would meet a surprise :D

    Russian metro

The Russian metro was built as a nuclear bomb shelter in real life, I don't think any American metro systems were built to be shelters. I wouldn't know though.

Well in the Metro Universe books there is a chapter when a group of people restore a plane and fly to st petersbrugh. And that could be a cool idea. Train is pretty interesting. Imagine ur somewhere in the Siberian Tundra riding a huge steam powered train at 140 mph. And ur fending off demons. :D

Were I live, we don't even have a metro system. so basically, I would have to dig a very, very, very deep hole to survive:p
And about the aircraft, I imagine it would be hard to find one, and even harder to find enough fuel to make a longer distance travel possible.

Depends how far from the blast you were...:D i was in stockholm about 6 months ago, theres at least one former civil defense shelter there, in the city centre, so surely more dotted across Sweden?

Soviet Russia was forever stockpiling military weapons and vehicles, so its not unreasonable to suppose these still to be around the Metro world.
In fact, in 2033 as you go up in the lift in D6 to the surface, you can just make out dim shapes in the darkness which look to me to be tanks (!)

    7.52 onwards...
