The right amount of "hard"

I offer this up knowing that there is no correct answer. What are your thought on how hard a game should be? How much work should I put in to gain a level? How much risk should there be that a landscape critter takes my character out? Am I required to think through a problem to find the solution or am I just aiming for the highlighted part of the map?

Their is no right or wrong answer I think to answer your question I think they leave it up to the player if a lot of people don't like it they adjust it.

Difficulty must be balanced for me with simplicity - like Vanilla WoW. I think a lack of this balance can cause a serious problem for gameplay dynamics.

I prefer games which are hard. I really think that most games nowadays are way too easy and aimed at people with little patience and not much skills. That is what sells nowadays so that's what most games are like...

I think a good example of the right amount of hard are Thok and Blackfuse Heroic fights in World of Warcraft. It's neither too easy, nor too hard. They test the individual skill of each player as well as they combined since the fights require good communication.
A bad example of hard is TERA... I think this game is hard because the fights are extremely long and you have to stay focus to avoid every attack, though at the same time once you learn the fight it's just repetition.

The right kind of hard, is challenging. As in, you are forced to put in some effort to kill a mob, but nothing frustrating while still giving you a sense of accomplishment. I think the only multiplayer game series that has pulled this off, is Guild Wars and GW 2.

WoW's challenge modes are actually one of the best if not the best PvE experience a game has to offer. They are quite difficult, but at the same time fairy easy if you have a team that has good communication and know what to do.

As I initially wrote, there is no right answer to this question. I sometimes just feel like there is very little risk in playing PvE a lot of the time. I don't want things to be difficult to the point of being frustrating, but I would be more engaged if I had to pay attention to my health once in a while.

I think a game should be hard enough to challenge a gamer and make them think about the best way to get through the game, but not so hard that the game becomes impossible.
