Survival may be a scary thing for a lot of Minecraft noobies and even a game mode that everyone hates. One of the many reasons for that being so may be the simple fact that some of us just plain out don't know how to defend ourselves very well. When playing survival, what is the first thing that you aim to do, and what are you methods for fending off a gargantuan mob?

To survive know your skills and know when to back off. If you think you might die while your doing something then it's a good possibility. Learn the ropes slowly so you know what you're getting into before diving in.

I completely agree with wvboarder...just know you're levels and really get the came and that mode before you just start going crazy and going ham! I know i hate to die in minecraft so if you think you are stop before you do and just save yourself. The game is awesome, but its still a challenge know what you're learning before jumping right in.

Yeah you need to find that balance between Risk taking and Reward. If you don't take some risks, the game won't be as fun, you won't be rewarded as much, and you may miss out on cool stuff. On the other hand, you may die, get lost, get distracted from tasks in game and so you have an unfinished base/project. You have to find your own balance!

The first thing you should be doing is look for food and build a shelter so you don't die in your first day.
Also, finding coal would be a good idea

First thing you want to do is punch a tree so then you can get that crafting table going. I mean it will be slow at first but eventually it will get easier and easier. What you don't want to do the first time you start is build a dirt house, we all have done this and then along came the Creeper and blew us up.

To survive in general, you need to make sure that you have some good weapons and armor. Of you do, then you'll be safe from mobs that want to hurt you. Don't be too daring - if you are in a difficult situation with a few mobs around, go away. Don't just stay there to die.

I think a lot of people die in minecraft due to poor budgeting of time and resources. You have to time some things right so you aren't out in the open when night comes, or you're prepared to fight when you are stuck outside with the scary monsters.

I think the most important thing to do when you start is gather enough wood. Collect wood until the first day is over and make sure you get some food. Then, when night begins to come, start digging down and getting other resources. After getting some iron, go back to the surface when it is day and start building your house! With iron armor and tools, you should be able to defend yourself!

Never do more than you can handle. It's just not worth losing all your hard earned resources and getting lost in the dark when you respawn. This is especially true in the nether those annoying pig mobs will never let up.

That's why I light my structures and surrounding area really well to prevent any monsters from showing up. I like for them to be at a distance so I can test my shooting skills with a bow.

Oh its all about survival for me. Infact, what I consider the first 48 hours or the first to days and night of the game are the most fun for me. I take it as a personal challenge seeing how quickly I can get set up and functioning. First things fist though, find a tree, punch and repeat, get enough wood to make a full set of tools, pickaxe, shovel, axe and hoe. If there is any grass near you go smack it with your fist tll you get a few wheat seeds, use the hoe and just plant them, this is there to act as a stand by food source. knock down another tree build your planks and then build a latter. Dig down, yeah yeah, its not a great idea, but it works just did down till you hit rock and mine a few blocks so you can build your stone tools, then dig deeper.....MUCH deeper, I always go straight down to level 12. No creeps and zombies to worry about unless you hit a cavern, and on the dig down you should have hit a few spots of iron and coal. set up a little work station at the bottom of your mine shaft, crafting table, and furnace, burn your wood if you havn't gotten coal yet set up a few torches and once you are satisfied you have enough stone, head back to the surface, check if its daytime, and build a simple stone shelter above your mine shaft. You should now have enough to get by for a bit, but your next task is going to be hunting down a few pigs for food and a couple of sheep to get wool for a bed. Once you can sleep through the night its easy mode from then on.

Did you also know that mobs can't spawn in a vicinity of about 16-32 blocks near you? (I forgot the real number). If Lu build a completely closed house, light it up and stay there, no monsters are going to spawn there during the night.

    This!
Play it safe. If you don't you're dead. All of the time spent is wasted. Except if you learned something from it of course ;)

Always close doors. It was a pet peeve of mine when I played multiplayer with friends and they would leave my doors open. Occasionally I would find a zombie inside! It isn't a very nice present.

Also, if you are going to explore a cave, always use torches on one side only and then on the way back just follow the torches on the opposite side and you can get back easily, even if the cave is full of random turns and criss-crosses.

32 blocks is not much really. It's enough for skeletons to snipe you or an enderman to see you and teleport in your direction

The best thing you can do to keep alive is be scary. You have to remember that the world of Minecraft could be very hazardous and, therefore, you need to take measures to survive and advance in the whole game. For example, if you want to hunt, it's okay, but do it when you have enough equipment; after all, if you lose all he experience and the items before arriving to your house it would be just a waste of time. Also, you have to make save points if you want to do an effective mining.

    Don't take risks.
Remember, monsters attack you as much as they can.
Don't come home late. You can get hungry too.
Make tools of Iron, not cobblestone and certainly not wood (well, only allowed in the beginning).
