About a month ago, I decided to play some minecraft. I tried to login with my username and password, but it wouldn't let me! Strange... I thought I had forgotten my password, so I tried getting a new one, but the e-mail never arrived! i figured something wasn't right, so I decided to check online if my player skin is still the same. It wasn't! What is more, the account was active 10 minutes ago! I was shocked, but I soon calmed down and decided to contact support. That's when the problems began. I had received my minecraft in a giveaway, so I wasn't able to provide the transaction ID and I did not have my gift code anymore. I thought I was screwed. But nonetheless, I contacted support. They told me I had to provide as much information about my account as possible. The date, time and location of the gift code redeem. I panicked. This was 3 years ago! I don't remember the date! But wait! I sent a PM to my friend the day I received the giftcode! So I checked the date of the PM, submitted the information and got my account back!
To prevent something like that from happening to you, here are some tips:

    1. Write down when and where you upgraded your account.
    2. Write down your giftcode or the transaction ID
    3. Have a strong password and switch it often! (I had 6 lowercase characters, not enough!)
    4. Set up safety questions if you forget your password.
    5. Do not send your password to anyone, ever. Mojang would never ask for it!

Thanks for sharing those tips. They will be useful and perhaps helpful to any players that account's will be stolen. It's also sad to hear about your story it must have been really stressful for you, although after all I'm glad that you did get your account back. Did you discover who hacked it?

I knew his name and surname, since he wrote it on the account information page, silly guy. And I know he is Russian. But Googling his name yields dozens of Facebook accounts, so I didn't bother pursuing him. It's enough of a punishment to not be able to play the game anymore. :)

Thanks for sharing :) I'll add that as well as keeping these in text format, it might help to take a photo of them, I've always found it much harder to lose a photo, with all the places that my photos are backed up to (iCloud, Google+, OneDrive, Copy, Dropbox)

Yes, I actually have all my photos backed up to 5 places ._.

Very helpful tips!! Sorry your account was swiped. It happens. Back when i was younger and playing Runescape i learned the hard way just like you. It never feels good to put in all that time and effort onlt to have it wasted.
