Trolls/Rude for No Reason

This is usually either done out of humor or because they are kind of messed up in the head - it is sort of a product of their environment. You have to have a little sympathy for them, because people living happy, healthy lives rarely end up as internet trolls because they're too busy having fun and being happy.

 

I usually try to annoy them even more. If someone takes a game that seriously that they will act a fool for no reason then it's all the more amusement for me. If I'm not in the mood for it I'll just ignore it or leave but if I'm not feeling particularly lazy I'll find out what I'm doing that is annoying them and I'll keep doing it.

 

Just ignore them, they get bored eventually but if you pay them any attention you're basically fueling them. Fortunately in MMO games there are plenty of ways to avoid trolls.

 

Did they ask you to help them?
If not, then they see you as stealing their kills (kills mean experience).

I have learned that one back when I was playing Neverwinter Nights (1) on a persistent world server. When I arrived at a boss area, two players were fighting a boss and it looked like they were losing, so I helped without them asking. One of them attacked me instead for intervening. So from then on, unless I am asked to help, I won't intervene.

That was for the reason of "insulting" you received in your example.
Anyway, if I were you at that moment, I'd just apologize and leave (or stay back and watch if you are too curious about what might happen to them). Either way, it was not "no reason".

 

There are several kinds of "trolls" in my opinion. When I played 7 days to die, there were real "trolls" that would deliberately try to interfere with your enjoyment with the game. Since there is no real way to prevent it. It's like the get some twisted kind of happiness just to make other miserable.

Then there are the misunderstood ones. Since there is no real way to interpret what is going on, I always try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. We might actually be causing more probelms by trying to help. Kind of like in WOW way back when someone lead this huge ass boss to the town and it wrecked ass killing everyone and the lower levels wouldnt stop respawning to make the boss leave. They simply didn't really know.

Then there's kids. I don't even want to bother with that. Sometimes it's best to use your best judgement to know when to ignore them and when to try to communicate to see if you help is needed.

 

I simply ignore them by focusing on the task I'm doing. Sometimes people criticise you for legitimate reasons, but you know when a person is trolling when they utter the forbidden phrase starting with 'Your Mom...' Then just leave them to whatever they're doing and focus on real issues. Much better and more fun.

 

Make friends with the strongest players in the game and troll him back with them. XD

But seriously, I just ignore them.

 

People sometimes get really offended and find it hard to ignore trolls. Which ofcourse is what the trolls want. If you are playing a game like RUST for instance, there will always be trolling and theres no getting away from it. Other games, you can simply hit the ignore button and watch them eventually leave you alone. Depends on the game really. Trolls seem to get off on your reaction so either ignore them or don't play into their hands.

 

This is the internet in general.. doesn´t matter if it is a facebook group or some forum somewhere, there are always people who think it is funny to be rude. It is part of being able to pretend you are anyone and at the same time be anonymous so nobody can point out who you really are.

But really it comes down to the type of game. The more pvp or competivness there is to the game, the more trolls there are. DDO and UO-trammel had no pvp, and had the nicest overall communities of any mmorpg I have played.

 

There is really no avoiding Trolls. You will find them all over the Internet, be it in MMORPG games or on Facebook. Just don`t feed them.

 

Yeah what's good about online trolls is you could just mute them with a click of a button. I've had to deal with trolls in real life and I only wish it were that easy to just ignore and mute them lol. It's okay though since dealing with trolls just made me better at knowing how to troll them right back.

 

Trolling a troll is not going to work, in my experience. Better just mute or avoid them as best you can.

 

Trolls are there for a reason-- to ruin your game and piss you while. The best response I think is just to ignore them and play the best game of your life. They bask in interaction so ignoring them will make them quit. Sometimes people just die every time and they troll instead, I hate that.

 

Muting them is the best way, because usually they don´t even know they have been muted and will just waste time trying to talk to you. The only games where I purposefully try to troll trolls is LOL because they are so obnoxious. I am a pretty average player, but some times I see weak players get harassed, so what I do is just say something like ´you think he is playing bad, wait until you see how bad I can play´...

 

I don't engage them, and I don't care what they say. They have no power if you ignore them.

 

I love to troll them back, it's fun seeing how a troll acts when he gets a taste of his own medicine. Most of the time I just mute rude and mean people though, I don't have time to deal with their stupid problems.

 

Ignoring them is generally the best thing to do if you want them to stop - People like that thrive on the responses they get from people, so in a lot of ways responding is just going to give them the reason to do it more... Though I won't lie, sometimes trolling them back can be quite funny as well, not the optimal way to deal with them, but humorous nonetheless.
