When I am gaming I am playing on the same computer that I use for work, banking, shopping etc. While it might be nice to dream of a dedicated gaming computer, I cant justify the extra expense. As a result I end up with a pretty vanilla computer with a dedicated graphics card. This allows me to play the game in a lower graphics setting, at a reasonable framerate.

There are a lot of things built into the games that can and cant be adjusted to improve performance. I can make the water look blue and flat, I can turn my shadows to blobs or just off, but there are things I cant do. Anything graphic and animated that is unnecessary to gameplay should be able to be turned off. Squirrels, rats, and other critters serve only to increase the workload on my machine. Weather effects like fog also have a framerate lowering property. Unless I have a quest to kill ten squirrels, please give me an option to get rid of them.

I really don't think that a few random critters is going to effect your performance THAT much. Fog should definitely be adjustable (and usually is considered a weather effect that can be turned off). Textures and water movement clearly make a difference in performance, too, and I remember needing to turn those way down on my old system, but not any more fortunately.

Critters require a miniscule amount of calculations to render. Things like fog, animated grass, haze, lighting, shadow quality, water quality and a myriad of other environmental features make up the bulk of the rendering calculations. In short, it won't make any performance difference. If you have the computer to run games like Crysis 3 and Farcry 3, then a few critters won't make a difference.

    Heh, tell me about it

This is an event by the way. Usually there aren't many of these little creatures but they are promoting that headgear, so they had those little creatures wear that stuff and increase their population than normal while prancing around in towns.

Well, I used squirrels as my example to get peoples attention, but the bigger issue is being able to turn on and off as many of the non-gameplay graphics as possible. Fog may play a role in some games and it certainly creates a particular mood, but if it is slowing down a person's computer to a point where the area becomes unplayable, then it needs to be gone. One of the concerns I have when it comes to developers and beta testers is that they are true gamers. They use machines that are above average when it comes to gaming and they don't see how the below average computers handle the effects. My current computer does a way better job than my old one but I still notice a difference in some areas and am unable to disable a few of the effects.

I certainly understand your point. While I don't really experience this issue, I know people who does and it affects their gaming experience. In Dragon Nest, there are skills (particluarly those used by alchemists and mystics) that are known for causing lag to players with below-recommended system requirements and/or connection problems. I remember doing a Nest run with a guild member who is just using a built-in or integrated graphics processor, and often times he would just stop moving for about a minute because he says his screen is stuck to a certain frame until the mystic in our party (also a guild member) stops using the Black Hole and Gravity Trap combo.

It's not only about being able to turn everything off, it's also about the optimising the game to give you good performance. There are games that are well optimised and look good and run well on older computers, while others look horrible with low graphics and still have trouble running.

Nowadays optimisation really isn't that big of a deal, I've even seen people be impressed because "wow this game requires this and this to run" whereas in most cases the high requirements are due to poor optimisation rather than anything else.

Squirrels were the funniest thing in WoW. You would be on your way somewhere and go out of your way to get a massive 200k crit on a squirrel.

I don't really see a way around this unless you were to get a better system for gaming. You can manage optimization, but you're right, the developers have better systems than most of us. And that just can't compare with a "below average" system. There might not be a better answer than to just upgrade your computer, sorry man, been there, done that, spent a lot of money...but gameplay is better! ;)

lol, I completely agree, If its not necessary the option should be there to get rid of it to increase gameplay experience, forget about looking realistic

In my experience, I have experienced issues when turning on fog, critters, etc. It seems that if I just choose ONE "goodie" to turn on in game, my issues are very minimal. If I add on every little thing aside from the strength in graphics, the game will lag.

If it is unnecessary, you might as well turn it off.
