So it seems the majority of us didn't find Last Light's Ranger Mode to be that difficult. So since 4A Games delivered us Ranger Mode in 2033 after fan feedback, how about a true hardcore mode for us Metro vets?

    Spartan Mode:

-You have only 1 life: you die, game over man!
    -Enemy AI: Hardcore difficulty
    -Damage Given/Taken: Normal difficulty
-Limited HUD: no crosshairs, no ammo count outside equipment menu, no icons, however equipment menus still show as normal
-2033 weapon restriction (1 pistol, 2 main weapons)
-Ranger Hardcore ammo restriction, but only 5 throwing knives instead of 10
-less filters, or less time given per each pickup, or cap off filter timer

    Thoughts? Any additions?

I like the idea. The 1 life is probably too harsh, the only difficult areas in the game are the ones where you're forced to fight large numbers and it's very easy to incur a cheap death in those parts. Maybe make it where the current level is started over or you start at the last checkpoint, but lose a % of your MGR.

OH, but the harsher the BETTER! >=D

But yeah, I can see restarting the chapter over as a decent compromise, having no checkpoints whatsoever.

Hell there could be two modes similar to Ranger Mode: Spartan Normal and Spartan Hardcore, where normal is restarting chapters and hardcore restarts from the beginning.

Meh, dunno.. the no ammo display thing is actually a much tougher idea, as you surely experience in the chapter below the church.. the one death thing is just annoying as is restarting the chapter.

I think the human AI needs a serious revamp, everything from the dead body/sound detection to their aim. Yes, you bite it pretty fast on ranger hardcore if you DO get hit but I swear I've often screwed up or purposefully caused a firefight just to have guys slowly duck down on one knee start MISSING me and by that time give me enough time to casually land 3-4 headshots and put them out of their misery.

Also.. throwing knives man..what gives? I'll be ready to even forgive the whole "I just chucked a knife into the guy's leg and he's dead" thing but how the HELL does one single knife ANYWHERE on the body of a nosalis kill it instantly? It trivialises the already mentioned level and..well..everything else. How about instead of this we get some proper immersive assistance to the aiming so that we CAN actually land truly deadly knife/spine/whatever shots with the knife.. and if we fail and hit a freaking arm, it'll just piss off both humans and mutants.

The other thing that needs to happen is less freaking gas filters.. seriously, this shit is everywhere! Nothing in LL nearly evokes the fear you got when facing lurkers in radioactive areas in the first game, knowing full-well their ambushes could screw your mask up while you still can't afford to wait it out because your filters are dying anyway. Here it's like well hey crab-guys/watchers/whatever.. let's just take a bit of a scenic tour of moscow since every 2m there seems to be a dead guy with perfectly serviceable filters and working masks abound too.

So yeah.. less effective knives, MUCH more effective human AI (mutants are fine tbh), less freaking filters.. I think that should be enough for starters. Otherwise they may as well rename ranger hardcore "throwing knives for cruise control" mode.

Absolutely this needs to happen. I don't understand why the human AI is so terrible. Surely there weren't THAT many people who had trouble with the first game's stealth. I really liked it the way it was, it was much more realistic. This is more of a light shooting simulator and Artyom is a throwing knife dealer of death like you mentioned.

I honestly like the idea of Spartan Mode. Human AI definitely is a first priority. If you have problems with the throwing knives just don't use them but if they could work on them that would be cool. I like the one life idea a lot, it truly makes the game hardcore. I don't necessarily want HUD, but seeing how much ammo total, or even a ball park seems fair. There are bunches of times I wish I could carry a shotgun, pistol and air rifle but I get stuck only grabbing pistols when I run out of ammo with either of my weapons. I'm going to stick through it and beat it then probably just do it on Normal Hardcore and turn off the crosshairs. Seriously though, I understand it's expected to smash the 'use' key in situations but it would be nice to at least have it flash in the corner of the screen or something during ranger hardcore. I've died multiple times because I didn't realize I needed to. - I don't find paying for difficulities awesome but I understand they made the best of the situation they had, but if I had to pay for a difficulty, Spartan Mode seems like it would be worth it. I think -that- is how the game was meant to be played! :D

Agreed, I would definitely like to see less air filters as I always had plenty, save for my Regular Hardcore run where I had actually ran out of air for a few seconds while holding off Watchmen outside the Theater door, THAT was intense! XD

This mode is definitely for the most hardcore playthroughs, so if it seems too tough, that's kinda the point. If Artyom died in real life, well yeah no do-overs. =D

As for the HUD, how about no 'active' HUD, but the equipment menus still show up showing everything as normal (including ammo count), but you see no icons whatsoever with intractable items in-game, much like Ranger Hardcore.

How about a "single-weapon" mode and related Achievements?

I.e. you select your weapon at the beginning, and through the rest of the game, you CANNOT buy / pick-up another type.

Of course, it may need an exception for the ending, but I think overall, the idea of going through the entire game using ONLY the pistol or ONLY the shotgun (sucks at long range) would add yet another "replay element".

What I would like is a hotkey for grandes. I didnt use a single one because of the Ranger Hardcore HUD, which is really how it should be. You need to REMEMBER what guns you have, and what guns you want to use. I usually picked up two of them and then just used one through the whole missing, eventually running out of ammo on the gun, struggling to find as much as ONE bullet after that.

I like the idea though. Would be awesome with the 1 life thing. Also the medkits should only work on radiation dangers, otherwise you have to like "use bandages" xD
(last one was partially a joke. THAT would be difficult otherwise xD)

I wonder if they added more filters because of the whole 2033s you run out game over man game over

I might have just expereinced a bug or being waaay sucky at finding filters, but I ran out of filters several times on Ranger HC.
Fighting Pavel without a gasmask was intense!

Might need to scavenge a little better. :)

I had so many even on RHC it got to the point I couldn't carry anymore.

Wow, yeah never maxed out my air filters, but I had easily over 30 minutes at all times during the last half of the game.

Anyway, tweaked the want list so that the enemy AI is the same as Hardcore difficulty, but damage given and taken is only Normal difficulty, that way you're given more room to breath before dieing. Also your ammo will be used up more when killing enemies, getting back to that survival aspect of conserving ammo.

Basically once all is said and done I want this mode to make you sweat and freakout during combat as a screwup can cost you everything. I really enjoyed Dead Space 3's Hardcore mode where if you died then that was it as well, which really ranked up the tension during intense combat.

Finally got around to beating 2033 Ranger Hardcore today, and man what a treat that experience was. By the time I got to climbing the Tower I only had 2 shots for my pistol, 3 for my Kalash, and a single shotgun shell. I really do hope we see the devs create a true hardcore mode for us vets as Last Light simply doesn't offer the challenge that 2033 did.

Sounds absolutely perfect. Three weapons is a must (since there's no real substitute for AR and Shotty in Ranger) and I liked 2033's system better. Maybe lift the ammo restriction a tiny bit (45 BB's? Really?), half the pickup rate of MGR's and make them super rare from corpse loot, selectively halve filter times (maybe not in the area with Pavel, as they're relatively scarce there). Definitely make ammo pickup rates from corpses super low, make the damage profile same as Hardcore.

Also make two versions of it, like Ranger mode. Spartan normal has Hardcore damage values and limited lives. Spartan Hardcore has Ranger normal damage (you can duck back into cover if you get winged instead of dying instantly) and one life. And, of course, scarcer resources.

We need a functioning equipment menu, and we need a bigger challenge. I like this idea because it presents both of those.

Ah, yeah good point for the two separate modes! Spartan Hardcore would definitely be the one life deal! XD
