What about distance fog?

One of the things that ruins the game graphics/aesthetics is distance fog. When you look into the horison there is always that washed out fog that fades everything away and just looks terrible. There are ways to avoid fog, for example battlefield 3 simply makes low-resolution models for far-away background, this sort of "cardboard set" instead of fog. That looks much much better and immersive.
So, devs, what about distance fog? Are we going to get crappy looking backgrounds like this or can we get something better like this (yes that is in-game engine) or this?

As far as we know devs don't post or read here(At least not regularly). However, I personally don't mind the fog so much. Try looking out of a high place and see how far you can see. =p Even the real world has the 'fog', it just depends on the atmospheric conditions of the area(As well as pollution) as to how far away the 'fog' actually is

Really it all comes down to your hardware. Distance "fog" so to speak, was largely squashed with the latest generation on consoles, and on PC gaming it was pretty much relegated to games that supported old graphics cards. So games like WoW that support a wide range of cards will have fog on the lower end but on the high end you can see quite a long ways before it gets foggy.
But like Slywyn said, this is a natural occurring phenomena in real life, so to completely get rid of it would make it less immersive, if that makes sense. ;)

I think what they should do and probably will do in the future is add expanded options to customize the graphics in accordance to your hardware. Other games allow you to modify sliders to show more/less detail depending on your graphics card capabilities.

I hate it when games limit the render distance when your hardware could do so much more. It should just make the distance unlimited depending on your video cards memory. I'd imagine they'll add it in the future like SwordHungry pointed out.
