Personally I think that in a few years Minecraft will start dying out. I don't think many of the updates that Mojang is planning are good enough and I think a lot of players will start leaving. They added new textures to doors and whatnot, but we haven't seen a unique update like a new block/mob addition in a while.

Well I think people will stay as long as the mods keep bridging the gap. If they make the software too bloated then everyone will leave because it's a massive game that's slow and laggy.

They can't add too much because the game will become too difficult for a new member to get used to. When I first started it was simple...now there's a lot more technical stuff like redstone blocks, comparators, etc and it will add to the learning curve of new members for sure. They're trying very hard to balance it out so new and old members are comfortable :D.

The mods continue to keep the community thriving, as long as the mods stay then I guess the community will always be there.

As long as people like playing it will continue to be popular. It's not the updates that make the game popular. It's the amount of creativity you can have while playing.

Mojang will find ways to keep the game relevant with updates, and so will the modding community, so I wouldn't worry about the longevity of Minecraft because it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

I think it will continue to be a very popular casual game that people play with their friends. I don't think it will keep the hype that it has enjoyed for years, but it will not go to the irrelevant game pile for sure.

Well, they said the same about Facebook. "It will last for a year or two and then start dying out, much like Myspace". It hasn't happened yet and I don't believe it will happen with Minecraft either. As long as Mojang keeps updating the game of a weekly or at least a monthly basis, people will play it. Well, some people will stop playing it, but there will always be new gamers that will start playing it.

Long as we have regular updates there will be a game. There are so many people that love to build mods for it I don't see it dying out anytime soon. Not all together gone at least.

Well, there are more generations to come and it's possible for someone to create a sandbox game surpassing Minecraft, but I don't think it'll completely die down for people. Like others have said, mods are still being created and updating, keeping people playing the game. Even if the number of players goes down, it'll remain a good game that people will recommend to eachother.

I think that as long as people keep playing and love the game it will be around for a long time. I am sure that minecraft will be a game many will still play for a long time even after it has died down. There are still games out there people still play and you do not hear much about them any more.

If they keep on with the new content, then the player base will just become larger and larger. But, I'm not sure how much more content they can actually put out.

I think Minecraft is slowly dying. Don't get me wrong I still love the game but if the developers don't pay attention to what they're going to do next then this game would probably end up being a lost cause, or at least with decreasing number of interested players day by day. But if somehow they manage to pull off something like a decent sequel then it's going to be going on for a few more years. But as of today, I think it's charm is slowly dwindling.
