What combat system do you like?

What combat system do you prefer most on a MMORPG? Action or "point and click"? For me I like the action one because in order to win in PvP it requires definetly more skill. An example of this combat is TERA which really requires a lot of skill in order to play really good.

Action. I like to actually dodge attacks thanks. None of the WoW BS where attacks follow you into eternity.

I'm fine with any type of combat system, in my opinion, it's more important that encounters and mechanics around the fights are interesting. I'm both a fan of action systems like Tera, and my favorite MMO is FFXIV, which very much has a traditional WoW-style tab targeting combat system.,

I think any type of combat system is appropriate depending on the game. Action RPGs can be fun, MMORPG tab targeting with combos can be fun. The combat system need only match the type of game and the repetitive nature of the game to be fun.

For instance, a mismatch.. Age of Conan had a really innovate combat system which I would have enjoyed, except for the part that there was so much mindless combat. The amount of mindless combat would have matched up well with an action RPG, but a slow, methodical and strategic combat system needs to go with a game where most fights are meaningful and not repetitive. In the case of AOC, it just took too much concentration and effort to kill a wolf, and then kill 100 more.

I certainly prefer an action combat system. I more of a PvP person myself and I find that the action combat system requires a bit more skill that is only acquired with familiarity. PvP seems to be much more fun when there is a skill-based combat system.

I loved the combat in Wildstar. The mix of movement with the hotkey attacks did it for me. The combat I WoW never excited me as it was all done basically standing still, I like action so understandably I prefer movement involved in combat.

As long as the combat system is polished and fun, I don't have a problem with any incarnation of it. It's true that the classic WoW point and click type of combat is pretty old at this point, but as long as it's implemented correctly, it can still be fun.
It is much harder to make an action combat system work for an online game, since ping is a big issue. You can't have responsive controls like DMC or Kingdom Hearts in a MMO, even though I would love one like that!

I like it PvP style like in Ragnarok, Ran or Flyff. It's pretty cool cause you get to see how much damage you make and you really feel the rality of being in the game when it's the same system you use to kill monsters.

I love hack and slash mechanics. I agree that "point and click" gets old very fast. I also love being able to dodge attacks because I'm skillful, not because of how many points I put into evasion...I feel accomplished when I defeat mobs or strong bosses by myself because it means you have to know their patterns and movements, which requires effort. Grinding and putting points into a skill, then just clicking skills doesn't really do it for me. Games like Vindictus or Dark Souls are super fun because of the effort it actually takes.

I love the combat systems of both TERA and Guild Wars. I think an action packed combat system really keeps you on your toes and you can have good fun battling mobs that way, instead of combat systems like WoW has, where you can stand around just mashing your num-pad to activate your skills.

I prefer the action combat system. It makes me more immersive on the game. And also more fun to play the game that way.

I prefer a more traditional combat system like what your find in EQ2, WoW, or SWTOR. I really don't like what they have done with combat in TERA.

I agree, being skillful to be is also one part of the game that make it interesting as at the end in games like WoW, Aion the skill doesn't really count, what really matters is the gear and maybe the order of the skill you use.

Action, definitely. I really despise point and click since it doesn't require a lot of skill, and I'm a pretty competitive person so I hate when someone who's worse than me is able to beat me.

I hate when people use the word ´skill´ and say that their playstyle requires more skill than ones they don´t like. In many games like WOW, the skill involved is timing your attacks and successfully maintaining the optimal rotation while reacting to the crazy stuff that is going on. Personally, i think ´click click click faster´ requires no skill.

In my opinion, when you have to react to what the other guy is doing, that is when skill comes into play.

The combat system in RuneScape is actually quite nice, as well as Guild Wars 2. I also loved the way Neverwinter works, except it's a bit P2W.

Any system that uses the keyboard for main actions. Mouse movement is fine, but primary actions should be keyboard based. Makes reaction time quicker.

I like an action system better usually. It's nice to be able to pick and choose the type of attacks I'm going to do.

Might be but also the "click click click faster" thing you pointed out requires a lot of trainig behind to be able to do it and a in-depth knowledge of animations and enemies' movements.
