I reserve the last six slots for: torches, food, axe, shovel, pickaxe and sword. The other four slots are a mix of dirt and other blocks. Basically, they're for things I need at the moment.

I usually keep my items in the following order from left to right: sword, bow, pick, shovel, axe, optional, optional, optional, food, torches. I'm kind of anal about it lol

I also keep my weapons tied to the hotbar because I use them the most. Other than that are building tools and food and other survival things. Basically, anything that I use most I'll hotbar them for easy access.

I tend to stick to creative mode and prefer building modern cities so I usually keep bricks, dirt, cobblestone, stairs, fences and glass panes. When I move onto lighting I keep an assortment of redstone parts.

Same here , I usually keep dirt in my hotbar for building. It always comes in useful around lava too. I sometimes end up not having any space in my inventory because of all the dirt , thats just me though!.

When PvPing I normally use 1 for sword, 2 for bow, 9 for food and the rest for potions. However, when I am exploring/mining, I would set pickaxe to 1, shovel to 2, axe to 3 and sword to 4. Torches go to 5 and 6-8 is cobblestone, dirt and wooden planks. 9 is most definitely food. I really like having a well-organised inventory and I find it very useful.

I always keep the following in my hotbar: Pickaxe, Axe, Hammer, Shovel, Sword, Torches and Cobblestone or whatever else I have just dug up. I like to keep those on me at all times. I would put food there but I'll be honest, I mainly play in the creative mode!

    1st - 2nd, A sword or food
    3rd, an axe
4th, either a stack of dirt or a cup of water
The rest i fill with what i feel i will need the most, if mining, more dirt and more tools, if adventuring, more food and more tools.

Food. Always food. Then after that, a pick axe. Otherwise, the other slots tend to change depending on what I'm doing at the time. But I always keep food and an axe on me, no matter what.

    Slot 1: Sword
    Slot 2-5: Tools
    Last slot: Map
The other slots are random, but most likely food or a few blocks to quicky put down. Such as cactus blocks in case I get attacked.

Sword, torches, pick, axe and maybe some food. It varies on what I'm doing though. If I'm building and not exploring or gathering then it's all resource blocks like stone and dirt.

This is pretty much exactly my set up except for the map. However, when I'm mining, the blocks start piling up in my hot bar.

My first four hotbar keys are for my sword and tools for mining, digging, and chopping trees. The next three are for blocks that I have just chopped, such as the wood or the cobblestone that I have just mined up. Number eight is for my food, it is just usually bread though cause I hard ever do PVP and key number nine is for my Torches as it gets dark in the mines.

I generally like to keep a few essentials in my inventory. First of all, I like to have a sword in the first slot. This makes sure I can fight off creepers. Next, I like to have a bow for long ranged mob kills. After that, I like to have my tools: pickaxe, shovel, axe.

I agree with allennf. I usually keep a sword and a bow in my first slots for the same reason. The next few slots are torches, food, and a few tools that I'll be using at the moment. The rest is random, depending on what I'm leaving my home to do at the moment. If it's for farming, they will primarily be wheat seeds and whatnot. If I am going to mine, they will be dirt blocks and more food and wood in case of emergencies. The hotbar really is such a useful thing. lol
