What do you like to see in a server?

So I run a server, and I'd like to cover a bigger audience with it, so I'm wondering, what would a server (my server or other) have to add to get your attention. :)

I prefer survival servers. Active staff, no griefing, hopefully mature players, a nice spawn, some fun plugins to play with. You might want to consider adding minigames as they are great fun!

Yep that's pretty much what I've been aiming for so far. Minigames are always difficult to set up though, unless you're a dedicated minigames server (and even then, it's expensive, you probably need multiple servers with bungee)

I think the biggest welcome mat you can have for new players is definitely a warm and helpful staff.
When you join a new server you always have some questions about it and it's nice if it's quickly answered.

Community above anything else. I like to see that players have formed bonds with each other and doing their tasks together for better results. I would mention the "donate/pay to win" situation but it seems that Minecraft Server rules have changed so there's no point discussing. I do not feel as if Server Plugins are necessary but they can add a nice twist to the game and allow for other more detailed goals.

I'll add my own answer here, even though I wrote the post :p

Usually when I join servers I like to see that it's daytime, and I like to see that there's not too much griefing around spawn. To me, that shows that the admins care about the server, because they're cleaning everything up after other people. I also like to see some kind of shop on the server, where I can buy/sell items.

I prefer a small, vanilla survival server with around 10 players. It's not crucial that we start at the same time, but it would be nice.

I like survival servers, just like many people do. It's more fun when people like to cooperate and work together. But having factions and PVP can be quite fun too! There's so many things that you can add to a server to make it interesting!

Oh yeah, coop survival games are the best!
Even if you don't start at the same time, if everyone helps out for the same goal it's lots of fun to just join up with the existing community.

True survival servers, no protection, no peaceful mode, as soon as you get out of the spawn you're on your own. No starter kits, you have to find everything yourself. The only way to get diamonds is to go really far away and start digging there.

Would this be for a server with griefing allowed or without?

I prefer survival servers that allow griefing (but obviously not hacks). I also like it if you don't start with much, possibly some stone tools, but nothing over that because otherwise you don't have much to work towards.

Well, my server doesn't technically allow griefing, but there's no protection outside towns so there's nothing to stop it (although I do sometimes rollback areas that are obviously griefed)

I enjoy Hunger games survival servers. Kill or be killed is the way to go. I want all that action. The best have prisons and factions. I don' t want a regular server full of griefers. When you want to play normal you play. But when you want to survive, you fight.

I enjoy communal building efforts where everyone is mining/collecting different materials to build something huge. Yeah, you can easily have infinite blocks in creative mode, but I find something really enjoyable about working with other people for days or weeks toward a common goal. When you finally get it in the end it feels like a real accomplishment! It also lets me feel like I've actually contributed something to the server, since I'm not a particularly creative builder.

I'm a real fan of survival mode in general, anything that involves a situation where everyone has to work together is fun for me.

I guess one server that aims to become a friendly community. They are hard to find because in most servers, I end up survival or creating things alone.

Yeah, I think that's because most servers are PvP enabled, so people think that if anyone teleports to them, they'll just kill them.

PvP servers, with the faction plug-in and TNT enabled. Without way toop many commands that make the game a little unrealistic. Also Creeper Eggs to buy on the Server Store and Creeper damage enabled on the server. I guess thats all I want in a server.

I like to see servers that spawn you with nothing, and in survival mode. I hate having to spawn into an area that is so controlled, that you need a moderator to bust you out of it. Trust your players to do the right things and make your server great. I also love to see a huge amount of creativity and development in it. It's cool to see hundreds of houses and structures built by random players over time and to explore it forever. That being said, it's also important to me that resources replenish somehow, because it's very hard to make those last forever.

Yeah, I had a plan for my server, although I never actually implemented it, where there would be a seperate world for mining, so the main world wouldn't spawn any resources, and I can reset the mining area every few weeks or months. It was actually a really good idea, but setting it up would involve resetting the main survival map (in order to have no resources spawn there), so I can't really do that. I definitely will though, if I ever decide to make another server for whatever reason.
