What do you think made Minecraft so popular?

I think that it was advent of let's players, combined with a unique game that had nothing else like it on the market. Then a few let's players picked it up, then more, then more, until it had snowballed into a massively popular game that nearly everyone played.

I think it has something to do with being able to use your own creativity in a way that other games don't really offer, and with things like infinite world sizes, and the great mod support, a lot more people are looking at it :p

The Herobine made the Minecraft hype.

I think the originality and simplicity of the game made a massive appeal to people.
It was so utterly different than any game people had seen before, and it was coupled with simplicity, being cheap, and supporting an underdog developer.

It's also a pretty addictive game. Once you see it, you want to play it, then you get stuck on it for hours, and you tell your buddies about it. It's a Minecraft chain reaction. :)

I think the open-endedness of it is appealing, plus it's addicting once people get started.

I strongly believe it was the creative aspect but I'm a biased Creative Mode player ;)

The fact that it was a simple survival/sandbox game that wasn't so complex to handle was probably the reason why it became popular. The controls were easy and you're free to make your own story in the "Minecraft universe." What made the community double in terms of size, however, is probably the amount of famous YouTubers make videos off of Minecraft.

Youtubers definitely helped spread the word and get new players involved. Once you saw the game being played you realized just how fun it was and just had to try it out for yourself. I think they sprinkled crack on the disk..

I think it's because of Minecraft's perfect mix of simplicity and sophistication. The controls are easy and you can understand the game after building your first few structures. And you can do absolutely anything you want. People love freedom and that what this game offers. It's very, very addictive too.

It's one of those games where you can let your creativity flow, in so many different ways, you can strive to build and create whatever you want. I think it's because we're all still little kids inside with lively imaginations, and Minecraft is the perfect outlet for that. It's simplicity and limitless potential are why I think it's so popular.

I guess it's due to its freedom in gameplay. How many games out there that truly let us create whatever we want? There are a lot of clones out now but Minecraft is one of its kind. The idea of letting the player grow the game is genius.

It's a game where you can do anything you want, you can create a castle, house, military base. Anything, it can also be run on very low end PC's so you don't need to buy a good PC for it.

It was a revolution to the gaming industry, that is a really big reason for it's success. It revolutionized open-end, sandbox type games because it just gives the player so much freedom to do whatever they want, whenever they want and however they want.

This created a big hype, evident from the amount of YouTubers that do let's plays of it. They are the ones that really advertised the game to it's full potential, and collectively formed such a great player base that it's reputation has become very solid.

Minecraft was something fresh in comparison to other games. It took a concept that had never really been explored to its fullest potential and made it into a nearly limitless game with a fair amount of charm. The quirks of Minecraft, in my eyes, helped make it what it is today.

People like Seananners gave it the initial boost it needed to gain the immense popularity it has today.

It was one of the first open world building games that got mainstream attention.

Because of circumstances, actually, it was a very interesting game that Notch took to a very responsive and appreciative anonymous image board, then he took it to social media, Reddit and etc - It also increased in popularity because some famous youtubers featured the game on their channel.

I definitely think the youtube hype helped launched the game into success. I think thats why there is a console version of the game. The dev support also helped the game too.

Creativity and imagination. Minecraft really opened up my imagination with its free-build options. You can literally build everything and anything, without other people to judge you. The game is also a pleasure to look at and will grow on you eventually.

It's because in a decade filled with shooters and gory violence, this game proved that you don't need that to have a good game. You just need a creative mind. Wow, that sounded cliche. Anyways, Minecraft was the sort of game that just gave a landscape, a fist, hearts, a hunger bar and an inventory and just said, "Go wild." So, we went straight to the wiki obviously. But, learning the mechanics of Minecraft and slowly adding to your crafting list is what makes the game so popular. Using you imagination and nothing more is what drives the game. Creating your dirt house is great. Creating your first castle is even better. And once you start adding mods, creating your first jetpack, wand, teleportation device, PokeBall, gun, anything really, is going to be even better, if that's possible. Everything about Minecraft shouts out, "Use your brain." And we do, to great amounts.
