What do you think would happen to MineCraft if Mojang went Bankrupt?

It's probably not going to happen, but what if it did? MineCraft updates and support would obviously be dropped, but would Realms or server hosting websites for MineCraft go too? I'm curious of what you think might happen, because this could happen, and if it does, I want to be prepared with like a million back-ups of the MineCraft launcher.

Well, the game only relies on the mojang servers for online mode servers, so all the offline mode servers would be fine. You wouldn't be able to log into the game with your own account if mojang servers went offline so you'd only be able to play on offline mode servers anyway.

I guess some modders would pick the game up and continue updating it, even if it's just unofficial, but I doubt a game as big as minecraft would just disappear.

But anything is possible. You never know. Those billions of dollars in their bank account could go "Poof" at anytime.

I think mojang said something about when minecraft dies, they'll release the source code for free online so people can pick up the game themselves to make whatever they can with it (and the mods that exist are already really good)

They would release the original source code of MineCraft, the modders can help develop and fix bugs in the game, but there would be an awful amount of spinoffs of MineCraft created, as the source code is released to the public for free.

Realms would definitely disappear, but you'd still be able to play single player, and also multi-player on cracked servers.

If they did release the source code, then multiple people would likely keep the game going.

If Mojang released the Minecraft source code, I think a group would try and provide unofficial updates. Eventually the servers will go down and less and less people will be playing.

Not only this, but a large number of Minecraft clones would pop up if Minecraft had released its source code.

Pretty sure they would patch the game for offline play along with server hosting from someone else. HOWEVER, that will literally never happen. Mojang is still swimming in money.

Usually what happens if a company goes bankrupt is that they owe someone some money. If they are unable to pay with cash, they can pay with assets. In the even that Minecraft goes bankrupt (meaning unable to pay debts) then Mojang will most likely be forced to sell the IP to cover their debts. Minecraft is worth a lot of money, and Mojang has no debt, but if they were to come into a cash crunch they would be able to sell a part of Minecraft to get out of it.

I'm pretty sure this is a great opportunity for other game developers to release their own game that is very similar to Minecraft to the world. If Mojang is gone and Minecraft is closed down, then the remaining players will definitely find another sandbox game to play.

I don't know really. You can't predict anything. However I highly doubt that anything like this will ever happen. Like somebody previously said Mojang is totally swimming in money, so it will like never go bankrupt. At least not any time soon!

That's a pretty big IF. If it does tho, Minecraft will probably just not be patched except by the fans. So Minecraft would probably still exist but the Mojang staff would move on.

I don't know how that would happen, considering Minecraft is the most successful indie game but you know...
Anyways, Mojang, and to an extent Minecraft, would be probably bought by some big company like Activision or EA *shudder* But, that's the reality of it. Minecraft is such a successful game that companies would be dumb if they didn't grab this chance before someone else gets it. However, once the companies buy Minecraft, they would integrate some dumb online mechanic, or micro-transactions and stuff. It would ruin the flow of Minecraft's simplicity and it's indie roots. Ugh, it's even too terrible to imagine right now. Good thing Mojang could literally burn money and it wouldn't be a problem.

All the online servers would go down, and the servers would have to re-open with offline mode, causing an uptick in piracy due to people who pirate the game being able to play on multiplayer servers with everyone else. I think Minecraft might be bought by another company, but that is a big IF, minecraft is 5 years old and is aging, probably all the money that can be made has been milked out of Minecraft.

That's pretty cool that Mojang would be willing to release the code to the public. I have mad respect for that.

Minecraft would be a free game if Mojang went bankrupt. Everyone would have access to it and they could host their own servers.

I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to convince many companies out there to buy out the rights to Minecraft, the most successful PC game ever creted
