I was tempted to check out League of Legends, but too many people warned me that the community is... well, less than stellar. I'd like to hear from people who are currently playing (or were very active in the game in the past) about your experiences, please.

Is it like any other game where you have some jerks here and there or is it worse than others? Or, are you one of the jerks? haha. Kidding. ;)

League of Legends looks like it would be a fun game, but I don't know what I'd be getting into.

In the server I play in, a lot of players are kids. But I do get to play with good players at around 2 to 4am. Playing around afternoon until 10pm is a big no for me since a lot of kids are still playing. I like the idea that kids play the game, but since they are kids there are a lot of problems with them. First thing is when picking champions, all of them want to pick carry champs. All damage and are too squishy, I don't mind playing tank and support but supporting a team with 4 carries is hard. And most of the times, kids do the trash talking. I have played with some players around 5 in the morning and all they do is ping the map, they won't blame you if you die.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I guess that is just one of the reasons that I started to avoid WoW. The kids were impossible. It was like they would come home from school and take out their bad day on everyone in game.

I suppose I should check out LoL late at night then. Well, first, I guess I should ask what time zone. It sounds like a better time for a newb to get started.

Yeah, I've played tank, healer, etc. I don't mind support roles, but like you said, I don't want to carry everyone else (and I really couldn't in LoL since I'm not even familiar enough with the game yet).

I wouldn't mind playing carry but if 3 or 4 players of the team aren't doing well, it would be impossible to carry the whole team. I mean, all 4 have fed the other team which leaves you with 5 strong champs in the opposing team and you're the only one in your team who is doing something good. I just played this afternoon and guess what? I got 4 straight defeats because of toxic kids. Always whining what others are doing and always picking ADC, I mean they can practice playing with bots first before playing an actual game with other players.

Playing with bots? Do you mean playing against AI before playing against other real people? Is this something the game provides (or allows)? I'd probably rather do that first than be at the mercy of those kids while trying to learn the game, ha ha.

Yeah, it sounds impossible. How are you supposed to carry an entire team?

Yes it is possible to play with AIs, in fact I do that whenever I buy a new champion. I do not want to ruin the game if I just jump in there using a new champion. And it really is impossible to carry the whole team, but one time I had to play this game which happened to have the most toxic players I have ever played with. One of them was consistently feeding the mid lane player, while my ADR kept dying in bot lane. I was playing Malphite that time, I just focused on farming so I can buy items to toughen up. We were just lucky we had a good Yasuo player on top lane. He in fact carried the whole team, but if I did not manage to build the items I needed we definitely would have lost that one.

Oh, that sounds cool. I think I'd like to try that before playing with others. Kind of give it a test ride.

Okay, you lost me. I don't know what most of that stuff is or means, ha ha. I haven't played yet.

I get the general idea, but I don't know the specifics.

Ah, farming. I guess that's part of every game. I don't mind it sometimes though. Sometimes it can be relaxing.

If you played MOBA games before like DoTA, you would have a lot of fun time with League of Legends. I love both of these games but for me, I prefer League. try playing it and start learning some champions, try all of them and pick one that you had fun playing with. You don't need to know how to play all of them.

I would agree with that, but then there are times when I would not agree with that, which is pretty much like all other communities. Hit or miss, but mostly miss, but it just depends.

The community in any game series is hit and miss I think, not just in games like LoL or WoW. I'm sure that we have all met players that we don't want to play again with, and then there are others that are a dream so it is just pot luck it seems.

I'm one of the older players I guess now, and it seems that as I get older I get less tolerant of the younger players. They don't tend to take it as seriously as I do, but again, maybe that's just because they are younger and other players may enjoy the fact that it's a game that shouldn't be taken as seriously as I take it?

I hear ya. I am and older player too. I do realize that "it's just a game," but that also often translates into a bad excuse for bad behavior.

If you are playing on your own, do whatever you want. If you join a team or otherwise engage in group content, I feel like you should actually try, have a clue, pay attention. Why waste the other people's time? I guess I apply real life to games in that I think we should respect others and their time. I guess I don't have much patience for kids who don't.

I do agree, playing an MMORPG where you can play alone and hunt monsters to level up is good even if the community isn't that good. But once you're playing a MOBA game where you need to play as a team, not playing good is acceptable, but being stupid and stubborn is not. There are a lot of kids who feed the enemy just because they already had a bad start playing.

I don't really have a problem with someone "playing bad" as in they are still learning. I have patience for someone who will at least try (and I hope they will have patience with me while learning to play this game). It's the ones that don't try at all or go AFK without saying anything or keep making the same mistakes or just behave rudely that I have a problem with. I don't think there is any excuse. Certainly, "it's just a game," isn't a good excuse.

I like to play with people who are there to have fun and want everyone to have fun.

I do agree with what you said, I would rather have a team mate who is doing bad but still helps on team fights than one who just goes AFK because he was doing bad in the game. A lot of kids who play are rude, they tend to be rude to the enemy playing in their lane but then they end up always dying instead of the enemy. After 4 consecutive deaths because of rudeness, they go AFK.

This might be going a bit far and looking into things too much, but maybe we can tie the lack of respect on games into the lack of respect that the younger generation shows in real life. These days it seems as if everyone is out for themselves and as long as they are alright, that's all that matters.

Transfer that attitude over to gaming and what you get is people playing with others but not actually working with them as a team. People who aren't willing to play with others really should stick to single player modes, but of course that isn't any fun, and they won't get the pleasure of ruining other peoples games.

I just played a while ago, I was playing support as Dr. Mundo. My ADR wasn't able to kill the other player so I chased him to the tower and I got the kill. The result? Well my ADR got mad and told me I stole his kill, he left me playing alone on bot lane. Good thing I was playing Dr. Mundo, If I was using a champion who isn't able to harass the enemy players, I would have had a bad game.

I have seen this too many times. I actually believe that some people get their entire entertainment from ruining other people's fun. It's sad, pathetic really, that trolls thrive on this kind of thing. They may even drive other players away from LoL. I know that the reputation for allowing trolls/bullying etc. has kept me from trying LoL to date, even though it sounds like a fun game. And, I'm not thin-skinned either, but I've heard from people I trust that it really is that bad. What a shame.

Yes there are a lot of trolls in the game. Better play around 1am to 4am if you want to enjoy playing. Most kids aren't playing around that time. I just played before posting this, I had 3 good games so far, no bad chats were made and most of the time we just communicate by pinging the map. Most people who troll a lot in the server I play in are kids. Once someone is typing and cursing a lot, calling names and feeds the enemy team, 97 percent of the time, those are kids. It's a good game to play, just watch out for trolls, better not play around afternoon til 10pm.

What time you play and who you end up playing with, often depends on where you live in the world as well. Playing at 10PM here in the UK for example, may mean that you end up playing at the prime time for the trolls in the US and really you shouldn't have to worry about what time it is in the world, just to avoid playing with the game spoilers.

It's the same thing here, Around that time a lot of trolls are playing. But there are times that I still play though I do know there is a ton of a chance that I would be playing with trolls. I just always wish that the other team would have two or 3 trolls and we would just have one LOL!
