For myself, I used to play elf the most often, but it also depends on the situation. Usually I feel like elf is the coolest lol... that's why I pick them. However when I was playing Neverwinter Nights, due to the character customization, I preferred the skills of Dwarf Defender. They had such high AC (Armor Class) which made them powerful in duel. So I used a dwarf most of the time but not without having tested other races. Come to think about it, human was the first character I ever used in NWN but I gave it up a long time ago. After NWN, I never used a human as my main character in any MMORPG. Elf was my favorite.

When I was playing Lineage 2, I played an elf. At the time it was beta, so there were tons of players at the newbie elf village. Even outside the village, I could see more than 100 players in my 360 degree view everywhere I look. Then I heard other players telling me at the human village they were so many people that you couldn't even move inside the town due to the lag... I guess more players are playing their own race? :D

What do you guys prefer to play? And what race do you think is the most popular in the games you have played?

Human, I bet? Humans are more relatable than say, orcs or elves, and people would enjoy the game more and immerse themselves with the story if they can identify with their character, and you can't really do that with other races other than humans. With humans, you can even make it look just like you, so it's more of a race that players can easily identify with.

Well, I did not feel like I was closer related to a human character than any other. Maybe exclude the orc. :D I just like the elf, the most noble race in most stories, their good looks, and immortality, wisdom, magic, and everything they stand for lol.

Humans are greed and power/money hungry. Short lived, grow old quickly.

Dwarves in most games look like grandpa to me. They are fun to play with though. I am actually having positive feeling toward them... more so than toward humans at least. :D

In most MMORPG, elves run quicker, and with more dex than humans. I used to make dex based fighter in Neverwinter Nights with elves, but found out while it is hard to get hit, they also did not hit hard enough.
Dwarves are stronger than humans in many games also with higher HP.
Orcs are also stronger than humans in many games. In Neverwinter Nights they are the best choice to make high strength fighters, but they are so ugly there so I didn't like to use them. In Lineage 2 however, the orc male fighters are actually pretty cool looking. They are kind of "weird handsome" lol. I still did not use them beyond an alt for fun due to they aren't that great in PvP.

Yeah I think the human race is more prevalent in MMORPGS. Most RPGs usually only have human characters only. I think elvish would be second best just because I've seen a lot of guilds who only accept on a race to race basis. Orcs and the undead would be far third option just because their abilities and power-specific skills can be limited.

I think elves are very popular. I always see some form of elf in any game I play that has a mix of this genre. There's also human of course. My favorite is always anyone who can either shoot from range or has a sword because those two are my favorite way s to play.

Actually I think sometimes it depend on the game and its background/settings.

For example, once I played on a Neverwinter Nights (2) server where the world is divided to two parts. Underground and the surface. Underground has only drows (or dark elves). So pretty much 1/3 of the players are drows.

Elf is a good race if the appearance is good in that particular game. In Neverwinter Nights they are not so good looking. Actually all races are not that good looking in that game. People pick races more according to what classes/skill sets they wish to get.

Yeah I really enjoy the amount of diversity games are able to put in regardless of the use of tropes. As much as I see the same things everywhere it is kind of enjoyable how they all are still different in some way and I think it really shows the creativity of developers as I'm sure players would start to miss these tropes when they are gone which is why they put them in all the time in the first place.
