I have already played a lot of RPGs during the course of my video gaming life that little games could now surprise me. One of the games that surprised me with its uniqueness is Vagrant story. An RPG by Square that delved outside their norm. It was so unique that I couldn't categorize where the game should fit at first. Was it an adventure game? Was it an action game or an RPG? In the end, people considered it as an RPG. What made Vagrant Story unique was its battle system. It was so deep and engaging. It allowed players to target specific parts of the opponents body. It also involved "risk" which made you miss more as it accumulated. The weapon building system was so comprehensive at that time too. I was so lost and engrossed just by trying to mix and match different weapon parts. What do you think is the most unique RPG game that you have played?
I would say Monster Hunter is kind of a unique RPG game it has no level system, but you get stronger by crafting better weapons and armors plus I think it's the only game where you can fight scary wyverns which can be quite a challenge.
I would probably have to say the Fallout series games had the most unique I've played. Especially Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. The skills and abilities, as well as the optional semi-turn based combat was interesting. They also allowed you to craft items based on schematics, but I wish they expanded on that a bit more.
Paper Mario, of course! What other RPG out there lets you play as someone in PAPER form? And then Super Mario RPG was pretty unique as well. Bowser wasn't the main villain!
From all the RPGs I played, I like Skyrim the most. I tend to pay a great deal of attention to the graphics and Skyrim is unmistakably the most beautiful RPG. I have a bad feeling about Oblivion because I didn't know you could fast travel and spent hours walking from point to point.
The most unique would probably beThousand Arms. It's one of those games that you're a bit skeptical of at first, but it's actually really good. It even had Dating Sim aspects. Really weird, but really fun.
The Tales series is unique. You don't often see linear motion battle system in RPGs. What's more, you get to play multi-player during combat sequences.
The old Might and Magic games were very revolutionary for their time. Even today, there are few games that play that way. Maybe the Wizardry series, but those are very old games too.
