What mods do you guys use to enhance your gameplay experience?

I, for one, am averse to making Minecraft deviate too far from its Vanilla state, meaning that most of the mods I use do not directly affect gameplay by adding new blocks or mobs. Instead, I mostly choose light, client-side mods that work well on servers.

    1. Optifine HD G7 Ultra

This is an essential clientside mod for anyone playing Minecraft. It introduces a large variety of options to improve performance, and also has better optimization for better framerates! It also adds support for Connected Textures, making your game compatible with high-quality resource packs.

    2. Shaders Mod 1.8 [Merged with Optifine]

The Shaders Mod is exactly what it sounds like - it adds support for high-quality shaders, which, although graphically intensive, make the game look very beautiful. I mostly use Sildur's Vibrant Shaders and Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders.

Usually texture packs to spice things up a bit.. Have also done the Feed The Beast mod pack which was pretty fun.

I mainly use the feed the beast modpacks because they all are very well made and the variations of the main modpacks are fun as well. There are also a plethora of servers to choose form when using those modpacks because they are just that popular for people. Also, most of my friends who play Minecraft use mods from feed the beast and I like to play with friends so that is what I am usually playing as well.

I don't always use resource packs because of how much they change the way the game looks... I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to Minecraft. When I use resource packs at all, it's either Faithful 32x32 (finding the original Minecraft Forum post will take you quite a bit of digging – so many people are stealing the original pack these days), the Paper Cut-out Pack, or just a simple fix to make a grass block look like full grass from the side for smoother hills.

I just checked out FTB, it looks very professionally made. Do you have any recommendations as to a specific version you like?

I only use texture packs and that's about it. I'm all about vanilla Minecraft, it's beautiful as it is. No need for crazy mods.

The classic "Too Many Items". I really love the item because it simply makes it wayyy easier to craft items, especially with other mods, such as:
"Ars Magica" 1 and 2. I honestly prefer the first one as there is a set of spells that every player can get. In the second one, it's more open that you can make a spell with ton of effects, but you are limited to one class, either offense, defense, or just mundane tasks.
"Thaumcraft" also goes very well with Ars Magica. Another magic type of mods that's really entertaining to get into. Look them up!

I used to have Tekkit but I uninstalled it because there are some things that are not quite to my liking. But I installed at least 20 mods on my Minecraft and I'm very happy with it. Applied Energetics, Thaumcraft, Extra Utilities, Mo's Creatures and many more.

Thaumcraft, Pam's HarvestCraft, Sitll Hungry, etc. I use a lot of mainly food mods since that's something I feel like there needs to be a better system for.
